Hi,I did the following:
what's the difference between strep throat and tonsillitis?

Homes Everyday
Strep throat is a sore throat caused by a streptococcus bacterial infection. Tonsillitis is inflammation that could have many causes.

Tonsillitis just means inflammation of the tonsils. This can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, or anything else that inflames the tonsils.

Step throat is an infection of the throat with Group A Streptococcus bacteria. It is a specific bacterial infection that is treatable with antibiotics.

Strep throat is caused by a certain bacteria and tonsillitis is a swelling of the tonsils that can be caused by bacteria or something else. They can have similar symptoms but they are no where near the same thing. They both can cause swelling in the throat, pain when swallowing and other similarities. The thing is that Strep can cause tonsillitis but it isn't the same thing as tonsillitis. I know it's confusing and sometimes the only way that you can tell the difference is to go to the doctor and get a throat culture where they check to see what little nasties are growing.

TweetyBird
Tonsillitis is an inflammation or infection of the tonsils and tonsillitis can be a symptom of another condition. Tonsillitis is usually viral.

Strep throat infection is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by group A Streptococcus pyogenes. Infections such as Strep throat and infectious mononucleosis can both cause tonsillitis thus making tonsillitis a symptom of both.
