what would cause pain in the tonsils/neck area but no sickness or sore throat?what would cause severe pain on the left side of neck (coming and going randomly) where the tonsil is located? I can feel it hurting there when I LOL or talk too loud also. I am not sick with sore throat, fever, vomiting -- none of that stuff though. So it can't be strep throat or tonsillitis, right? I am diabetic, type 2, high BP. I am 31, ty.

Tonsilitis is caused by inflamation of the lymph node, due to a bacterial infection. The lymph nodes slightly expand as the white cells fight off the invaders. hence inflamation, however this can become more of a discomfort as this nodes can expand further and hence tonsilitis.

Google glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Sometimes problems in the neck can cause throat pain, but you are describing an intermittent pain. Makes a neck problem less likely.
