What age did you children have their tonsils out & how did they do with the surgical procedure?I'm taking my son to an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor for swollen glands and large tonsils and I just know he is going to tell us he needs to have his tonsils out.

Kids do fine, the younger the faster they recover. Mine had them done at age 3. Took him 2-3 days for him to be back to normal. Tonsilectomy is a relatively simple procedure. Your ENT doctor will explain you the rest.

I had my tonsils out during the summer between kindergarten and first grade, I believe.. I would've been six. This was back in the 80's when doctors loved to remove tonsils as almost a routine, but I really did need mine out.
I was put under general anesthesia (all I remember about that is having a doctor put this plastic mask over my mouth and nose and tell me to breathe deeply.) My throat was super-sore for awhile, of course, but I was thrilled that my doctors told my parents I HAD to have lots of ice cream.. I think I remember being given a green popcicle in the hospital.. I was a little scared, as any 6 year-old would be at a hospital, but I don't think I was really traumatized.. my memories of it are kinda vague.. I remember mom and dad bringing me a new care-bear (a racoon) in the hospital to hug and have with me in bed.. I remember the mask (they let me keep it I used to play with it) and the green popcicle.. and how happy I was to see that quart of rainbow sherbert (my fav ice cream) in the freezer when I got home.. "Just for me."..
so I didn't see it as a bad or traumatic experience.. and I was aLOT healthier afterward. The horrifying ear infections I used to get.. where my ears hurt so bad all I could do was lay on a heating pad and cry and cry... those were gone...
So.. I wouldn't worry too much. Explain to your son what's going on as simply and informatively as you think he can understand. Explain to him what the doctors are going to do, that this will make him better, and that he'll be asleep and won't feel anything. Emphasize all the ice cream he'll get to eat afterward.. LOL

Your son should do just fine. I used to work Head & Neck surgery and techinques and surgical equipment have improved greatly. There should be minimal to no postop bleeding and if your son is not yet a teenager, his recovery should be quick. It's a low-risk procedure that may be done with a laser scalpel or harmonic scalpel. Both cauterize blood vessels as they shear the pharyngeal tonsils away from the tonsil beds. The same can be done for the adenoid tonsils (palatine tonsils) if these, too, need to come out.
Just remember to be completely informed of risks and benefits of the surgery and the consequences if you refuse to consent to it. You don't have to allow it. That's your choice, your decision.

My daughter, who's 18, had her tonsils out this October. She stayed in hospital overnight and was fine except for a really sore throat. She was given a course of anti-biotics and told to eat and drink normally.
