Should I get a tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils) because of tonsilloliths (tonsil stones)? The first thing I want to point out is I KNOW that you guys are not doctors and i will be seeing my GP about it but I just want some other peoples opinions on this.
I have numerous recurrent tonsil stones. They are basically white 'cauliflower cheese' like balls that grow in both of my tonsils. Every other day i fiind myself looking at my throat in a mirror and squeezing them out with a cotton bud - the only way to get rid of them as they constantly make me gag. What is worse about these annoyign things is they make my breath smell absolutely disgusting. After removing one and smelling it i was almsot sick. I went to see my GP and he basically gave me two options. The first was to ''grin and bear it'' (not his words). These tonsil stones are not directly damaging myself so if i can just keep up what i am doing it would be ok.
I chose this option initially but my breath permanently stinks and people have started to notice and i always feel so conscious about it at work.
So I am thinking bout getting a tonsillectomy which was the other option. What are peoples thoughts on this and are there any long term issues i need to be aware of from a tonsillectomy.... like i say i will be discussing with the GP but just want some of your opinions.
Indiana Jones
i had tonsil stones for about 10 years before i even figured out what they were. as a child my pediatrician said there was nothing wrong. as an adult my GP said there was nothing wrong. i happened to figure it out by looking online. as soon as i figured out it was tonsil stones i went to see an ENT (ear nose and throat dr) and with in a couple months i got a tonsillectomy.
its been a year and a half and i think it was a great decision.
if you decide to get a tonsillectomy bypass your GP and go straight to an ENT. they are the ones that preform the surgery. your GP is only going to say go to a ENT anyways so why bother going to the GP ya know.
Hmm
I think you should remove them.
If you don't remove them, you will have that problem for the rest of your life and it will affect your relationships and your self-esteem.
There are many people living without tonsils, of course it is not ideal but they do just fine.

Hi Ollie,
It's definitely a good idea to speak with your GP. Yes it does sound like you have tonsil stones. Surgery to remove your tonsils is rarely necessary. Tonsil stones (also known as tonsilloliths) are often misdiagnosed and fairly common. They are caused by the accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that become lodged in your tonsils. These can also lead to bad breath.
Try using an oxygenating toothpaste and mouthwash. When used in combination with nasal sinus drops it should eliminate your tonsil stones.
There's a really good site here: http://www.tonsilstones.com/
However, if your doctor does suggest removing your tonsils, it's definitely something to consider.
Good Luck. I hope this helps!
