Can using Listerine everyday prevent you from having tonsil stones?I get them and recently I had a sore throat for like 2 weeks and I looked into a mirror and saw something white on my tonsil so I took my wet toothbrush and brush it off and it was a huge white stone. I'm so disgusted by these things I want to learn how to prevent them

Possibly.

They are globs of mucous and bacteria so keeping your throat clean by gargling with Listerine for thirty-60 seconds could prevent it.

First one must understand that tonsillities or the white pus filled sacs that appear on the tonsils in the back of the throat, are most often caused by an infectious virus and less often a bacteria. Most often it is treated at home with over the counter medication and throat lozenges. If it is chronic a tonsillectomy is perfomed or antibiotics may be given after culture.

Tonsils act as a filter, catching the majority of bugs that enter our body through our airway. So rather they getting pneumonia, our tonsils catch the virus and we find ourselves with tonsillitis. If you exereince the following symptoms you should contact your physician:

*Temp of 102 or more in adults
*Abdominal pain
*Stiff Neck or trouble swallowing
*Sore throat lasting for more then 2-3 days

The main thing you want to avoid by visiting your M.D. is the possibility of complications for a streptoccal infection.

Home Remedies:

*Drink warm, soothing liquids — such as soup, broth and tea.
*Gargle with warm salt water.
*Take acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) to help reduce fever and decrease pain. Because of the risk of Reye's syndrome — a potentially life-threatening illness — don't give aspirin to children younger than age 12.
*Humidify the air
*Stay away from Smoke
*Rest your voice

LISTERENE:
Listerene has no medicinal qualities whatsoever in preventing or treating tonsillities other then about 20% alcohol in its contents which burns and makes it antiseptic, removing some germs. However, as we have noted, Tonsillities is a virus or bacteria and not something that any mouthwash can claim to prevent or cure. In the past, some washes made this health claim but have all now stopped after investigation of the FDA for making false claims. Listerene and other moutwashes do help you prevent serveral dental conditions and are recommended for regular use in your daily dental care. Listerene Ingredients:

The active ingredients listed on Listerine bottles are menthol, thymol, methyl salicylate, and eucalyptol. Ethanol is present in concentrations of 21.6% in the flavored product and 26.9% in the original gold Listerine Antiseptic (Ethanol is a type of alcohol).

PREVENTION:
The only prevention against the germs that cause viral and bacterial tonsillitis and are highly contagious is frequent and vigorous handwashing. Wash your hands often, and encourage your children to do the same. Other common-sense precautions apply, too. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue. Don't share drinking glasses or eating utensils. Avoid close contact with anyone who's sick.

I hope this helps answer your question. Listerene may make your tonsils feel better after gargling as it has some numbing effect, and it certainly freshens your mouth, but it will not prevent or help cure tonsillitis. See your Dr. if you find yourself with tonsillitis more then a couple times a year. It may be time to think about having a surgeon remove them for the sake of your health.

Good Luck
