Are enlarged adenoids/tonsils a problem in children if they cause no pain?I have noticed for a while that sometimes when my daughter (7 yrs old) talks, it sounds as though she is speaking through a pinched nose. I checked her throat and noticed she has enlarged tonsils, they appear to be swollen, to the point where they touch the uvulva.

She says it does not hurt, does not hurt to swallow, no ear pain, etc. She doesn't have any trouble breathing. I thought maybe it was a cold coming on but 3 mos later they are still enlarged. Still no pain.

Is this a sign of an underlying issue? What could cause this? TY!

I would take her to the dr.

The problems arise from causing snoring at night, or affecting the voice as you describe. It is probably time to have your daughter evaluated by an ENT.

Oh yes. My son was talking very nasally.

Normally, when you have enlarged adenoids, you also have a problem with your ears, so I would definitely bring her to an ENT. he had his tonsils out, adenoids and tubes put in his ears and that cured all.

Large adenoids can cause sleep apnea.

Hope all goes well.

You should watch her if she has mouth breathing specially at night, Your ENT specialist will be able to tell you if she has enlarged Adenoids.
Adenoids could cause sleep-apnea along with other ENT problems like frequent cough & cold,Nasal bleeding,Eustachian-tube blockage,Ear infection(otitis-media) and defective dentition. Some times child develops peculier facial characteristics,There is usually no pain in adenoids .
Adenoids are basically lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx,it is enlarged normally because of same reason as tonsils like infection or allergic stimuli.
You should consult some ENT specialist for thorough evaluation.
