I was prescribed pain killers along with antibiotics for tonsillitis however the painkillers arent working?

Hi,I did the following:
I was prescribed pain killers along with antibiotics for tonsillitis however the painkillers arent working? My Doctor prescribed Hydrocodone/APAP 5MG/500MG, and it says to take 1 pill every 6 hours as needed. I took one pill yesterday and I was still in alot of pain. It helped with nothing at all. I took another pill today, and the painkillers still arent working. Why might this be?

Sure it says one? I had same thing and was told to take 2 at a time

Sorry about your pain. The person you should really be asking is your doctor. Make an appointment. There's a very good chance her or she can prescribe something else that's safe, but more effective. An Internet Q&A probably isn't the best place to find better meds.

Take hydrocodone exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take it in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

That dosage is for low to moderate pain levels. Are you sure it doesn't say to take 1-2 pills as needed? I've never seen a prescription that says only to take 1 at a time. Call your doctor and tell them that they're not working for you. They may tell you to take 2 as needed.

it says u should be taking 1 pill every 6 hours and you should be following it
not taking 1 once a day that's probably why it's not working

Call your doctor and tell him that the vicodin just isn't doing it for you. He may be able to prescribe a slightly stronger pain killer, like 5-325 oxycodone/APAP (percocet).

Often, prescriptions for 5/500 hydrocodone/APAP suggest that you should take 1 or 2 every 4-6 hours. 2 of those pills, though, would be 1000 mg of Tylenol, which is the maximum you're supposed to take at one time and is really quite a lot of Tylenol. (The FDA has just suggested that the maximum recommended *daily* dosage be changed to only 2600 mg every 24 hours. That wouldn't allow you very many doses a day at all, if you were ingesting 1000 mg at one pop.) So if possible, I'd recommend that you try to get a stronger pain killer, rather than doubling up on the vicodin.
