Does viral tonsillitis cause white patches on the tonsils or is it only bacterial that does this?I have had tonsillitis for 2 days and the pain is extremely severe. Went to the doc today and the strep test was negative but he gave me antibiotics anyways (Augmentin).
My tonsils look like this with even more white ->

They hurt soooo bad and I am really tired and have swollen glads. Those are my only symptoms.
Do you think it is bacterial or viral? can the viral kind still cause those white patches?
What are the white patches? excretions? bacterial colonies?
Oh and I would have asked all of this of the doc, i tried. But his accent was thick, it was urgent care and he was just hurrying me out of there so I feel kind of pushed away with no answers.

That looks very much like bacterial growth. You have quite the case of tonsillitis. If you do not begin to feel some better after 4 days on the antibiotic, call and check with the doctor or their nurse about whether you should come in to be seen. Not all antibiotics are the right one for a specific type of bacteria. You could be on the wrong antibiotic. Viral infections do not cause that kind of white on your tonsils. Hope you feel better soon.
