Does penicillin work if you 'know' you are going to get tonsillitis?Bit of a random question i know!
Basically my girlfriend has tonsillitis, i was prone to it back in the day and was given a repeat prescription of penicillin, so i've still got LOADS stacked away in the cupboard.
Even though i feel healthy and fine, but cannot afford to get ill over the next few weeks. Can i take the penicillin to prevent myself from getting tonsillitis in the next few days?
Thanks!

If it gets infected againt, I honestly don't recall if anybody still used penicillin for tonsillitis. There's nothing wrong with penicillin; it's a great antibiotic, I just don't know what the sensitivity profile is. Most GPs these days seem to like to use amoxicillin or Augmenting (same thing plus clavulanate, a beta lactamase inhibitor) but I haven't treated this in a long time. Maybe penicillin has adequate coverage. Now in terms of how you know that you'll get it and if what you have is expired, I would urge you to have this formally diagnosed by a physician rather than speculate. If it's complaicated, say with a peritonsillar abscess, the treatment will be more than just antibiotics, so I urge you not to pre-treat. If you start getting sick, see the physician and they will pick the most appropriate agent for you, my son.

if it's bacterial, then penicillin
if it's allergy, then penicillin wouldn't work
if you always had bacterial tonsillitis, then it would work.

First of all, throw away all you have left, antibiotics expire after a few weeks.
Second, it will do no good to take antibiotics before you get sick, as you can actually build a resistance to said antibiotic. Best to go to a dr.
