Will removing my tonsils help throat mucus and throat peanuts?I am constantly hacking up mucus from my throat..it gets so bad I can hardly breathe! Also every so often I feel itchyness on my tonsils and its b/c i have throat peanuts stuck behind them that I often hack up too! I've been thinking that maybe removing my tonsils will help both problems. What do you guys think?

Well, the tonsillectomy will definitely take care of the "throat peanuts". I've never heard them called that before! But yes, those are also called tonsilloliths which translates to Tonsil Stones in medical terms. They're caused when bits of food, plaque, etc. get caught in the tiny pockets in your tonsils (or not so tiny, if your tonsils look like mine! My doctor calls them Swiss Cheese Tonsils haha) and build up, hardening a bit to that weird squishy texture. Your tonsils will, at some point, sporadically expel them to get the bacteria away from your soft palette and that's when you hack them up.

You can usually tell when to expect them by looking into a mirror with your mouth open wide and a small flashlight to look inside. You can see them in your tonsils, just peeking a bit out. You can often get rid of them before hand by gargling with warm salt water which acts in two ways: the warm water helps relax the openings to the holes, which can expel the tonsilloliths, and the salt will help counteract some of the bacteria. You will often feel a tightening or soreness in your throat just prior to them coming up.

As for the mucous, it is likely a result of an infection of some kind, perhaps tonsillitis. The color is very telling: clear or lightly white colored is generally considered fairly healthy, perhaps a reaction to allergies, or your body reacting to a stimulant it doesn't like. Yellowish green means there is an infection present in the body.

If the mucous is a constant issue, you may have something in your lungs. It is definitely worth looking into because while mucous serves a very real biological purpose, suffocating you isn't what it's there for!

So, in short, a tonsillectomy will cease the "throat peanuts", but the mucous may be a deeper problem in your lungs. :-)

Best of luck and take care!
