Bacteria or viral type and location of infection

Strep is a bacterial infection. The bacteria is called Streptococcus pyogenes.

Tonsilitis is usually bacterial, but can be viral. A number of bacteria can contribute to tonsilitis, including Streptococcus pyogenes, so i that sense they are very similar.

One sign of tonsilitis that usually separates it from strep is the appearance of small pus-filled sacs in the throat.

Strep Throat is a very contagious infection of the throat, while tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils and you can have an operation to take care of that. The strep is a virus and the Doctor will give you an antibiotic, but since it is a virus they just help some of the side effects but not the infection.

Tonsils are a lymph gland that filters out waste and dead invaders, when they become inflamed, that is called tonsillitis. A strep throat is throat tissue attacked by a streptococcus bacteria.
