What is it like getting your tonsils removed?I'm writing a story in which one of the characters gets tonsillitis and has to go to the hospital to get them removed. But I pretty much don't know how it goes down. What happens before they knock you out? What happens afterward? When do they let you go? When does your throat stop hurting? Some detail would be nice. Thanks!

I had mine out when I was in my 20s, so I don't know if it would be different for someone younger, or older. Also, my experience was about 20 years ago, so perhaps customs and procedures are different now. But what I remember is that on the morning of the surgery, they made me swallow a tranquilizer so that I wouldn't be afraid, which irritated me because I knew there was hardly any chance anything would go wrong, so I wasn't afraid. Then they wheeled me into the operating room and the surgical team were all very cheerful and friendly, which helped a lot. Then they put the mask over me and told me to count backwards from one hunded. I don't think I even got to the 80s before I lost consciousness. The loss of consciousness seemed instantaneous and was not distressing. When I woke up in the recovery room, I was groggy and a little bit nauseated, but not much. The thought of food was revolting to me, but otherwise it was not too unpleasant. My throat hurt. It was like having a very bad sore throat from a cold. But they gave me lots of mint-flavored spray anesthetic to use whenever I wanted it, and during the two days I remained in the hospital they gave me lots of ice cream to eat, which was nice, and the doctors and nurses all fussed over me and sort of spoiled me, and the worst part of the experience was that I felt very guilty because there were a lot of people in that hospital who were much more seriously ill than I was and I felt that I did not deserve all the kind attention I was getting.

Unfortunately I do ont know too much about this, but if the person is older the recovery is much longer.
