Tonsillitis , strep, cold, I don't know?Woke up the other day and my tonsils were swollen, no fever, a little nasal congestion some coughing. I thought it was just a cold until my tonsils were so swelled that it's hard to eat anything. I don't have the money to go to the doctor right now and I don't feel like it's a complete emergency so I don't want to block the traffic in the ER for something they may consider minor. I checked again to see if there was a fever when I woke up and it was only 99
I did a search for home treatments, and I've been switching back and forth from Tylenol and ibuprofen for the swelling. I did have enough for that new cepicol with pain numbing action, but it doesn't last long. And two sites it says gargle with salt water, but that burns.
Is there anything else I can do at home or is it time to go to the ER even though it's not a heart attack or anything, just swollen tonsils…….with no white patches .

The fact that you do not have white patches signals a virus. You'll be fine - stay in bed, drink lots of fluids, have soup and sleep it off.
Might take a few days for you to get better, but you are already doing everything right. Continue with ibuprofen or other painkiller and let your body work it out.
If your fever increases above 102 and pain continues I would go to the ER or doctor.
You haven't mentioned how long it has lasted, but I'm guessing a few days. Anything more than a week with no improvement? You should be concerned and seek medical treatment.

sounds like strep, and unfortunately you will probably need to go the doc, try a walk in clinic, not ER. with strep if you don't get rid of it, it can affect your heart (at least that is what my doc told me) and antibiotics will help-usually about 10 days worth. and symptoms will go away in about 2 days.you can drink hot tea, with honey(sipping) and ibuprofen is the better thing than tylenol. (but easy on that as to much can also create stomach ulcers-follow the label). but it could also be sinus infection. go to the doc and get diagnosed.

You got me while I was board, so I looked up the differences between strep throat and tonsillitis.
According to WebMD tonsillitis presents itself with a cold and cold symptoms as you have described.
Strep throat comes on suddenly without cold like symptoms and is marked by a fever of 101 or above and needs to be treated with antibiotics.
I'm no expert but it sounds like tonsillitis and you are doing the home treatment look here:
http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/tonsillitis-home-treatment
It says it might take 4-10 days so you can wait a few days to see if you feel better or go straight to the doctor, or ER and get a strep test to be sure, because strep can cause other problems if not treated. It's all in the link I gave you.
