What is the function of tonsils?

Hi,I did the following:
What is the function of tonsils?

motherof 3
The tonsils are areas of lymphoid tissue on either side of the throat. An infection of the tonsils is called tonsillitis. Most commonly, the term "tonsils" refers to the palatine tonsils that can be seen in the back of the throat.

Like other organs of the lymphatic system, the tonsils act as part of the immune system to help protect against infection. In particular, they are believed to be involved in helping fight off pharyngeal and upper respiratory tract infections.

The tonsils actually aren't that useful, and are somewhat more of a liability than an asset. Some scientists believe that they aid in producing antibodies, to help ward off certain diseases. Though they aren't very effective in fighting viruses, they might have been effective in fighting worms and parasites, which aren't very common today. So in today's world, the tonsils don't have much use. In fact, the tonsils are sometimes considered to be "vestigial structures" meaning, they no longer have a use in our bodies due to evolution.
