Tonsillectomy?I am 23 and having a tonsillectomy in 2 weeks, what can I expect? I am nervous about the sore throat afterwards, how bad is it? Any insight?

I had it done when I was 4, and I could eat only ice cream for at least 3 days. I have heard it is worse when you're an adult. I'd stock up on tylenol, sherbet, ice cream, maybe jello and juice. I would think that soda/bubbles might hurt your throat!
Good luck! Make sure you ask which pain killers will be the most effective...

I hate to tell you this, but it IS bad. Stock up on lots of shakes (protein shakes are good), yogurts, puddings, popcicles, and other foods that are easy to swallow and require no chewing. I was hardly able to eat for about 2-3 weeks, and I lost a lot of weight because of it (TOO much weight!).
This is why you should try to add a high-calorie shake as one of your meals during the recovery period. Try sucking on ice cubes. That helped me maintain my health.
Ask your doctor prior to the surgery about anything you need to know about, as in what to avoid and what things will help. They will usually give you a reusable ice pack to use after the surgery. Keep it if they do. I ended up using mine much more than I originally thought I would.
It will get better, though. Just be pateint and follow the doctor's orders.
I hope your surgery goes well! Good luck and I hope this helps! =3

Hi! I had a tonsillectomy last July and I was 25. The sore throat was pretty bad for about 10 days after surgery for me. I also had pretty bad ear pain as well, which I was told is pretty common. I think I had pain a little longer because I hemorrhaged 3 days after my surgery and had to get re-cauterized the following day. My advice to you- don't eat any warm foods for 10-14 days after your surgery, since that can make the scabs soft and fall off early. Stick more to non-dairy items like popsicles, applesauce, and jello. Dairy products tended to make the back of my throat really thick and made it even harder to swallow. Be sure to rest, rest, rest! Stay ahead of the pain by taking your pain medicine as often as prescribed, at least for the first few days. I hate taking medicine, but that made all the difference. I hope everything goes well for you! Best of luck :0)

I am 23 as well and just had one in October of 2006. It really wasn't all that bad. The only thing that really sucks about it is afterwards when you can't eat anything really. I ate yogurt and drank juice and ate applesauce, pudding and stuff like that. The procedue itself you will not feel anything because they put you to sleep. I have never been put to sleep before until then atleast not that I can remember anyways but you go into the room where they are going to do the surgery and you lay down on the bed and then the nurse puts an iv in you and then the guy comes in to put you to sleep which he does it through the iv so you don't feel anything. It's crazy cause one minute you'll be talking to the nurses and then the next your out. I woke up and it was like an hour in a half or so later to the nurse saying my name and telling me if I'm ok and how my pain was and if I wanted water and a pop sicle. You feel really weird when you wake up too. Like your drunk and on some good drugs and you just want to go back to sleep. It's hard to walk or do anything really afterwards fro the rest of the day because really you just want to go back to sleep. I came home and slept for a few hours. They gave me a few prescriptions to but you get them from them and don't have to go get them. So you will do fine I'm sure and I hope I helped you prepare for it. Atleast now you kinda know what you'll be doing adn how you'll be feeling. I wish ya the best!!

I just got mine out on Tuesday!
Im in really bad pain :( I'm 21..and this was my first surgery as well.
You can expect:
Pain to feel like strep throat
extreme ear pain
dehydration
hunger
possibly nauseus.
I recommend:
chicken noodle soup (just swallow the broth and tiny noodles though..chicken gets stuck!)
a good painkiller! im on liquid lortab and its smells horrible, is hard to swallow, and only lasts about 20 minutes...
You will lose weight and get very little sleep..Im not really tired (though I've barely slept)..I hate to sleep for too long though bc u wake up dehydrated and the scabs hurt.
Everyone and their mother told me to drink lots of water or ill feel worse & I got so tired of hearing that..but its true..especially for the short time that the pain killers work, you should try and down about 40 oz.. it will help the healing process!
i also had an excessive saliva increase...I have to walk around the house with a towel or paper towl so i can spit every few minutes..
Dairy products= not fun.
Good luck sweetie..it really is painful..not the surgery part whatsoever, but the recovery is a bitch.
And its true...they say you will feel okay on the 2nd day and then shit on the 3rd and then ok the next and then horrible again..its normal!
Best of luck to you.. Im going through the same thing right now :( and in a lot of pain..
I feel best when i take a warm bath, my meds, drink a few glasses of water and then sleep for about 2 hours.. or watch movies..anything to pass the time..
P.S. another thing that is sometimes common is a sore tongue bc they have to clamp it down during surgery. mine is so sore to touch, and is all bruised purplish black.. :( so def. dont worry if it does, 10 days will go by sooner than u think.
