Should we have tonsils removed with adenoids in our 3 year old son?ENT specialist wants to remove the tonsils in our 3 year old son when he removes his adenoids in a couple of weeks. Our son's problem is definitely more with his adenoids: snoring issues, sleep apnea, etc. Should we go ahead with his recommendation to remove his tonsils as well even though he has had little or no problems with tonsilitis at all? (Other medical issues: slight asthmatic, year round allergies)

from personal experience i would say no. my then 4 year old had both removed last year. his problems were like your sons mainly related to adenoids. post op was dreadful, he was in so much pain and his throat was so raw, whereas the child next to us had an uneventful post op, only had adenoids done. if i had my time back i would only have removed adenoids. my boy would also have mild asthma and allergies and i thought having tonsils out might help lessen infections, but it hasnt. hope this helps.

Yes you should.. my daughter use to get sick constantly and had trouble sleeping at night which would cause her to wake up with headaches due to her adenoids causing sleep apnea. It was recommended that her tonsils as well as adenoids were to be removed. After her tonsils were removed the doctor showed them to my husband and I .. they were huge with scar tissue from infections etc.. her adenoids were removed as well and she has not gotten throat infections since. Her health has been 100 percent.. eating habits are lovely and I am glad we made the choice to do it.. she feels so much better and looks so much better no more throat infections and nasal problems. She sleeps through the night too which is a great thing.

If it is recommended you have them removed do so and have the doc show you your child's tonsils so you can see the condition of it which will ease your mind. Your child will feel and look so much better with the procedure.. you will see how he will get sick less and sleep much better.

Edit: Children heal up faster after those have been removed it is recommended you give them soft foods to eat and follow up with the doctor. Any adult getting their tonsils removed have a higher chance of having extreme issues since their bodies cannot heal faster so it is best it is done when they are a child. Children will bounce back in about a week.

I would most definitely. Generally, if there are problems with one, problems with the other will arise in the future. It's a simple surgery and better to only put your child under anesthesia once. I've had both my tonsils and adenoids removed, and so have my brother and sister. Now, I'm a mom myself, and if my son was ever to need one of his removed, I would let them do the other at the same time. Also, he would only have one recovery if you did them together than if you did them separately (in the future, that is).

I say do both now. Why take the chance that he will need them out anyway down the road. The recovery is painful, I still remember drooling on my dad when I was 3 or 4 because it hurt to swallow. However, I have a friend who is in her 40's and she didn't have tonsillitis when she was a child but she gets that and strep throat all the time now. Her doctor told her the recovery for an adult is at least 6 weeks. Stock up on ice cream, popsicles, pudding, and jello since they will be cold and easy to swallow. Hope this helps and I hope your son's surgery goes well!

i had both takin out and though it hurts for a week or two its best to do it all at one time so he dosent get better after his tonsils are taken out then be "sick" again with the adnoids removed! but you should decide what you want to do and what will be best wwiht your family
