Does white stuff have to be on your tonsils in order for it to be strep throat?I think i may be getting strep because my throat is extremely sore more than just whenever i get a cold and get a sore throat. the pain is 10x worse and it keeps getting worse and there are bumps on the back of my throat past my tonsils but i don't have the white stuff on my tonsils yet...can it still be strep?

Jessica
No, you can have strep throat with no physical symptoms at all..

You don't always get white patches. My daughter had it about a month ago, and hers just got really swollen. She also had a rash spread across her neck and chest, which I've never seen happen before.

Certainly. Go see the doctor.

yes it can. I once had strep, and I knew it was strep because it was unlike any other sore throat i had ever had, and my lymph nodes were swollen. I went to the doc and she said the symptoms I told her didn't describe strep and that there was nothing she could do. And, I told her politely that I wasn't leaving her office until she did something and that if she wasn't going to I wanted to see another doc. Another doc came and did a throat swab and sent it to the lab. Sure enough, strep. So, yea it could be. It doesn't present the same in everyone. Go to the doc and get antibiotics asap.

you need 3 out of 5 of the centaur criteria to be considered strep pharyngitis
1)exudates (the white patch)
2)pharyngeal erythema
3)tender cervical lymphadenopathy (swollen glands)
4)Lack of cough
5)Fever
