Medical Question: Tonsillitis or Strep Throat?Unfortunately, I just discovered a bunch of white spots on my tonsils. I also have swollen lymph glands (under the jaw) and difficulty swallowing (presumably from the tonsils). I don't know whether I have tonsillitis or strep throat, though.

I have had both this year and Tonsillitis is when you have the white pus bags on your tonsils and it is really hard to swallow. Step throat is more of your throat hurting than your tonsils.

the white on your tonsils sound like Tonsillitis, and it's super painful. Go to the doc. That can be cleared up pretty fast.

Tonsillitis and strep are the same thing, it just depends on whether or not you have tonsils, which you obviously do. The symptoms you are describing definitely sound like tonsillitis to me. Check your temp., fever is common, so is nausea. If I were you I'd take some tylenol or advil, gargle with salt water or vinegar and water, drink some hot tea with lemon and honey and go to bed. If you are not better in the a.m. or if you have a high fever I would go to your Dr. if they have Sunday hours or an urgent care.

I don't know from you description if you have tonsillitis, but it is definitely not strep throat. Strep throat turns your throat cherry red and makes it feel like it is on fire. It also causes a pretty high fever most of the time.
