Have you had a tonsillectomy as an adult due to recurring tonsillitis? What was your experience? Pros/Cons?I have suffered chronic ear- and throat-related illnesses all my life. Though my ear infections have become less frequent, I've had recurring tonsillitis anywhere from 3 to 5 times a year for the past several years. Unfortunately having taken so many antibiotics over the years has worn down my immune system and what little I'm not allergic to just has no effect on the infections, and I cannot keep pumping antibiotics into my system. So I'm starting to explore homeopathic treatments, and also exploring the possibility of tonsillectomy, however I'm 26 years old, and have heard that as an adult I shouldn't get a tonsillectomy. Very confusing information and opinions about that! I'd like to hear from those who have similar issues that have/have not had a tonsillectomy, and those who have tried homeopathic remedies. I'd also like a lead for a good Kaiser specialist to consult with in the East San Francisco Bay Area. Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

i had my tonsils out at 26. it was no big deal. it was sore for a couple of days, but no worse than strep throat. the only weird thing was that sweet things burned like acid for about a week after. but all in all, not a big deal.

I had recurring sore throat problems a few years ago ... finally had to have my tonsils out at the age of 41. The good news is that my throat cleared up wonderfully, and I'm sick much less often.

It was not that bad ... more uncomfortable than painful. Had to live on very soft foods for 2 weeks (yogurt, soup, juice, Slim-fast).
My swallowing reflex felt different ... after my throat healed, it was much easier to swallow, so I had to be careful when drinking.

All in all, a very positive experience with only minor discomfort. My biggest gripe was that I was recovering on New Years Eve, and couldn't drink!

Good luck to you.

Chronic ear infections and chronic sore throat ARE a result of recurring infection of tonsils or recurrent tonsilitis. When those were removed, at age 24, I had NO sore throat or ear infection or even a COLD for 10 years or more. It was obviously the root of the problem.

GO for it. You won't appreciate the sore throat for a few days AFTER the operation, but it doesn't last forever either.

i was around 31 i think very painful the pain med they gave me worked very well make sure you get refills tho mine was 1 at a time and i usually ran out on a weekend. I was afraid to run out so i would wait too long to take a dose. If you follow the directions there shouldnt be a lapse in the meds so the pain shouldn't be too bad. Also the 1st year after the surg i got more colds than before, BUT, after that i rarely get sick anymore and if i do it's only for like 3 days at most 4. Another thing after about 7 to 10 days the scabs slough off and you can have some bleeding (very scary) but if you gargle w/ice water it should stop after 10 min or so I ended up going to the er and by the time i got there the bleeding had stopped. I did have significant relief afterwards, I think it reduced some pressure I was having. Make sure you get the good pain syrup like oxycodone I think it really does help. I would def. do it again. Any other ? E-mail me.

I had my tonsils out at 26. I had chronic infections of my tonsils for months and months and months and felt I had no other options. In the long run it was a good thing I did, although it hurt and I'd rather give birth to a litter of babies (and I have BIG babies) than go through that again! Because of my tonsillectomy, they discovered I had a displaced septum, possibly on of the causes of my infections, and a year after the tonsillectomy I got that fixed as well. Breathing is much easier now! Ask your doctor what the pros and cons would be for you to have the surgery. Your doctor can answer any questions or concerns - or ask two or three for other opinions.
