diagnosed with tonsillitis but antibiotics not working?

Hi,I did the following:
diagnosed with tonsillitis but antibiotics not working?I went to the doctor last week with a sore throat and earache, and he told me I had tonsillitis and prescribed Amoxicillin (500 mg). I've been taking it for about six days now, but I've only gotten worse. I'm going back tomorrow. Is there something that would prevent the medicine from working? I've been resting and everything, and I haven't gotten better and my tonsils have gotten worse. Thanks.

The type of bacteria that is causing your tonsilitis could be resistant to the antibiotics that you're using to treat it.
Antibiotic resistance happens over time when an antibiotic is used to kill bacteria, but (due to a process called natural selection where the bacteria least suseptible (called resistant) to the effects of antibiotics are not killed), over time, many antibiotics do not cure an infection.
I'm sure you've heard of tuberculosis. The bacteria that causes the sickeness can no longer be treated by antibiotics because it is immune (resistant) to all of them. This is why tuberculosis is so serious of an issue.

If it's not this, it could be because you're on another medication that "cancels" the action of the antibiotic, therefore not easing your tonsilitis.

I hope that I helped you out and your throat will get better. Keep on resting and taking in your liquids!!

I can think of a few reasons the Amoxicillin is not working.
First reason is that it may be a resistant strain of bacteria.
Second reason, you may not have the correct antibiotic for your infection. It may be a bacteria that does not react to Amoxicillin at all, i.e. wrong antibiotic for bacteria.
Third reason, you may be misdiagnosed, tonsillitis may be a symptom of the infection - not the primary cause of your problem.
Regardless, you need to get onto a different antibiotic and get an accurate diagnosis.
I hope you feel better and that some of these reasons may make some sense.

First thing that comes to mind is that your infection is viral, in which case Amoxicillin will not work. Second this is that if it is caused by a bacteria, usually a streptococci bacteria, it could be resistant to that medication. Usually your doctor can tell whether it is viral or bacterial simply by looking at your tonsils.

Actually, that's perfectly normal. Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by viruses, and antibiotics do not change the course at all. Of the remainder, strep is the most common pathogen, and antibiotics have very little effect on the course of that, either. The main reason for prescribing antibiotics isn't to get you better, but rather to avoid late complications, so it's important to complete the course. Another possibility is mono, and if your tonsillitis turns out to be mono, you can be thankful that you haven't had the rash that combining the disease and amoxicillin often produces.
For all the wannabe doctors, it's a rare instance when a different antibiotic is going to be called for with tonsillitis. It isn't at all like other infections.

no, seems to me it is time they get taken out if the medicine no longer works
