Can you still have strep throat if you don't have a fever? My throat is swollen. I don't know what part because I don't know how to tell if it's the tonsils or what, but in general my throat is swollen. Only the left side hurts. It's achy when I'm not doing anything, but there's a sharp pain if I swallow or move my tongue enough that the back of the tongue where it meets my throat moves. Every time I do either of those things it's also sending a sharp pain up through my left ear. When I woke up this morning it was just a sore throat and progressed to the swelling and ear pain. But I don't have a fever and no cold symptoms. I do have a headache. Very very read throat and some red spots, but no white or yellow ones.
If it's strep I don't want to go to the doctor because the antibiotics that are prescribed are to make you noncontagious. They don't actually help the strep go away. Not according to webMD anyway. It says that strep goes away within 3-7 days with or without antibiotics. But if it's something else I'm thinking I should get it checked out. I have no insurance though so I don't want to go if I know it is strep. Sorry if this is muddled. My head is killing me and ibuprofen isn't helping. Ugh.

If you've been exposed to Group A strep recently, you can begin to have symptoms without a fever, although it will come later. In this case. WebMD is wrong. While there are hundreds of strains of Streptococcus Penicillin and erythromycin both have sensitivities about 90 percent and work more quickly than your body alone would.
I'm not recommending you take the antibiotics for anything your body can take care of on it's own, because that leads to resistant Bacteria. I just wanted to point out the factual inaccuracy.

I don't see any where that WebMD says that antibiotics don't make the strep go away? They certainly do. Perhaps you are reading this wrong.

If you have strep you definitely need to go to a doctor and get antibiotics as strep can spread to organs like your kidneys.
It's unlikely that you have strep without a fever, but not impossible. I myself have gotten a positive strep culture without running a fever. So if you are not better by Monday, I'd suggest seeing the doctor and getting a culture/antibiotics.
Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

It sounds more like an ear infection that it does strep...
alianna_hodiya
the ear pain is referred pain (ears and throat share the same nerve)
You do not always have to have a fever when you have strep. and antibiotics are given to you to prevent complications of strep go to the dr.
