Can a person get mono even though they had their tonsils out?I have had a sore throat off and on for about 3 weeks. I went to the doctor and she prescribed an amoxicillian for my ear infection that I had also. I thought maybe it would've helped my sore throat also. So is it possible for me to have mono even though I had my tonsils out awhile ago?

Yes you can still get mono with no tonsils/ They are not related. It has alot to do with your immune system and if you really think that might be the problem you should see your dr. again.

The loss of your tonsils and getting Mono are completely unrelated. Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which you can still get even with no tonsils. It is not spread as easily as some other viruses, such as the common cold as the virus is found in saliva and mucus. Usually it is passed from person to person through kissing, but rarely it can be passed in other ways. Signs of mono usually develop 4 to 6 weeks after you're exposed to the virus. Generally, people only get mono once. It is usually diagnosed after your doctor asks you some questions about our symptoms and then may do blood tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Since your Dr gave you antibiotics did she say whether she thought you had Mono or not? Or is this something that occurred to you later? Either way, give your Dr a call about any further concerns you may have.

Mononucleosis is not an infection of the tonsils;therefore. yes you are susceptible to the illness.
Mononucleosis (Mono) is an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It is also sometimes known as Glandular Fever or even the "kissing disease" because of one of the ways it may be passed on. It is a very common infection, particularly in young people although it can affect any age group. Probably about 90-95% of the population have developed immunity while young with a milder form of the condition and these people are not at risk of catching it again. The rest are more likely to pick up Mono as teenagers or young adults so it is a common disease among students.

of course a person can still get mono even if your tonsils have been taken out. Mono is not caused by faulty tonsils, rather, it is caused by a virus called the Epstein Barr Virus. Mono is called the "kissing disease" because that is the main way the virus is transmitted, but rest assured, even if you have your tonsils out don't make out with someone who has mono because you will absolutely get it too.
