can living in a small apartmant with alot of second hand smoke cause a kid to get very big, swollen tonsils?my 3 yr old son and i live in an apartment with my dad and his girlfriend who are both constantly smoking in the house... recently i took my son to the doctor for a check up and she said that his tonsils were very big andswollen and she reccomended someday getting them removed... can it be because of the second hand smoke in the house?.... i am moving out in a month so he wont be living in a smoky apartment anymore... if it is because of the second hand smoke will his tonsills get smaller when weve bee moved out for a while?

It's possible. I would wait before rushing into surgery to see if moving out helps first.

possibly, but they could be swollen due to other environmental things as well, like pollens, dust mites etc.

Second hand smoke could irritate the tonsils, and is very bad for everyone.

My son has the same problem with his tonsils being very big, we had him checked by the doctor too & he told us to keep him away from any second hand smoke beacuse they will irritate them & make them possibly swell more

Second hand smoke is the leading cause of respiratory infections and ear infections in children. Any type of infection will cause the glands to swell. That is your body's way of flushing it out of the system.

Yes, it sounds like he is highly allergic to the smoke. You should try asking your parents to be considerate enough to smoke outside until you move out and try burning smoke candles, you can get them pretty cheap at wal-mart, but they are candles that you light that absorb the cig. smoke. Or try turning on a fan with a window open to ventilate the place.

The smoke is probably irritating his tonsils , but there may be other factors as well. Talk to your doctor about waiting to see if the swelling goes down after moving. If his tonsils are still swollen have them removed. Shame on your dad and his girlfriend for subjecting your son to that!

It is rare for a doctor to advocate tonsil removal these days. Get a second opinion. It COULD be second hand smoke or some other environmental hazard that was there.
With a child so young I would not take chances and I would go straight to a pediatric allergist.

probably not but you both need to get out of there soon

I think it's normal for children to have their tonsils removed. The age necessary may vary with the child.
Second hand smoke isn't good for anyone to be breathing, especially in a closed in area. It is especially dangerous for children or adults with upper respiratory conditions.
I think it's a good idea that you move as soon as possible, and tell your dad and his girlfriend, that when they come to visit you, to be prepared to leave their cigarettes at the morgue.
