Whats the purpose of having your tonsils taken out?I'm just wondering whats the purpose of having your tonsils taken out? does it make your troath feel better? does it make you swallow food easier? Or some people just have them removed for the hell of it?

They are taken out when they get infected. Otherwise, they are just left there.
melissa
most people who get them removed have a serious infection, or they get constant infections.

Doctors will sometimes remove tonsils if they get infected a lot. However, that's really their task; they stop the infection from going into the lungs.
It's not a good idea to remove them.

My Dr left mine in for several years and kept giving me antibiotics when they got infected. He finally gave up and removed them because the constant infections can eventually cause damage to the heart and other organs.

if you have problems with them, they need to be removed. otherwise leave them in

Hello, lol no i don't think people have them out for the hell of it.........I was seven years old when i had mine taking out...........You have two one on each side and mine will hmmmmm they were pretty bad...........I kept getting infections and one was closed all the way the other was pretty much getting there also. So if you don't take them out when there that bad they can close all the way and stop your air passage .......I would really take them out if there that bad but the doctors know whats best i am sure.....It is so much better when they come out...........You don't worry about infections that much but you can still get them at times and sore throats just not as often.Good luck and I hope i answered your question.........Terry

In the case of repeted infections they need to be taken out. My youngest daughter had hers taken out because they were inlarged, and were causing her breathing problems.

Don't undergo unnecessary surgery, but if you get very frequent infections in your throat, more specifically your tonsils (tonsillitis) it is safer for you to have them removed, rather than have the infection spread. Don't take sore throat pain for granted. If it lasts more than a few days, get it checked by a doctor.
