Whats the difference between strep throat & tonsillitis? I can't find a site that can explain the difference.?All the sites that are titled "strep throat vs tonsillitis" show me both have the same symptoms, all I want to know what the difference between the two are.

hey you :)
i think strep is just throat irritation by virus and tonsillitis is more serious and i think may result in removal of the tonsillis... i had my tonsils removed :) but not because of tonsillitis...

Strep throat is caused by a specific bacteria, streptococcal bacteria, hence "strep". It is extremely painful, and can be very dangerous.

Tonsillitis just means inflammation of the tonsils. It can be caused by strep, or it can also be caused by a virus.

So strep refers to the bacterial cause, and tonsillitis refers to the symptom. They're not the same thing, but they can overlap.

Strep throat is not a virus, it's a bacterial infection that affects the tonsils. The main difference is that strep effects the whole throat -- lymph nodes, swollen throat, tonsil pain, etc., whereas tonsilitis is infected tonsils. With tonsilitis, also, you do not necessarily need your tonsils removed, you only need them removed if you have tonsilitis very often. Both suck and hurt really bad, that's for sure.
