2yr old, severe tonsillitis, and can't break his fever... what should i do?

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them
2yr old, severe tonsillitis, and can't break his fever... what should i do?Took him to the doctor today and was told he had severe tonsillitis (red inflamed tonsils, green and yellow pus etc) but even with panadol/neurofen to bring the fever down, as soon as the pain killer wears off he shoots right back up to 39/40c Celcius... he's currently refusing his painkiller (even with me forcing it on him and trying to disguse it) and hes currently sitting on a temp of 39.6... help! Any tips??
He's got antibiotics (giving them to him now) but it was the problem of keeping his fever down in the interum that was troubling me.

hi
i understand how you feel i had the same issue with my own child. I was told to double dose alternatively with panadol and nurefon as they last different periods of time, this means he will always have a pain reliever in his system.

Your doctor should have put him on antibiotics, if these do not appear to be having any affect on your son, go back to the doctor and ask for an injection as this should take affect within 24 hours. I have never had to give my son the injection, but i myself also suffer from severe tonsillitis and can no longer take antibiotics and am given an injection immediately on diagnosis.

tylenol (my babies like the grape flavor and moltin (tylenol fist then 4-6 hrs later moltrin and so on ) ,,, use dosage according to weight then stick him in a cool bath and keep giving he cold water if it gets higher then 103-104 F bring him to the ER ! but then again if it is like 100-102 you might want to leave the fever alone so it can fight the infection

good luck (hugs to you both)
hope he feels better soon

If your doctor didn't give you antibiotics, then you need to get some. However, these can take up to 48 hours to really have an effect on the infection.

In the meantime, it is important to try and keep his temperature down below 40 degrees. The idea of interchanging the nurofen and panadol is good.

Try a cool bath, cool washers, keep him stripped (don't rug him up). These things should bring the body temperature down. Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids, because kids dehydrate easily, and this can also help get the temp down. If he wont sip water, get some white lemonade icy poles, these help a lot with hydration and kids are less likely to refuse them than water.

If none of this works, and the temperature is still hovering around 40 degrees in the next 24 hours, you will need to get him to the hospital, as dehydration may start to become an issue.

Good luck!
