Tonsil removal side effects, recovery etc.?I am thinking about getting my tonsils removed sometime this month as I have had problems with my tonsils since I was a baby. I am 21 years old and currently taking summer courses at my University. The doctor performs surgeries on Fridays and I have classes on Monday and Wed. Do you think that I will able to go to class on Monday or will I continue to be in too much pain?
Also, whenever I'm in a plane I get an unimaginable pain in my ears which is due to the tonsils being enlarged. Will this go away after I get them removed?
Oh and I've heard of people losing 10 pounds from having their tonsils removed and not eating, do you gain all the weight back immediately or does some of its stay off? lol silly question but any weightloss is okay by me!

I had my tonsils out when I was 25. I had strep throat 8 times in one year, so it was necessary. You will not be able to go to class on Monday or Wednesday. You have to rest. Your throat will be raw. It will be like you would rather spit than swallow. Popsicles and clear juices will be all you can eat. I lost 10 pounds in 10 days. I am glad I had it done though, because no strep since. As your throat heals you will get like a tickle in your throat. I coughed and (this is gross) I coughed up scabs that were healing on my throat. Doctor said it is very normal. Good luck!

It will be two weeks before you feel up to school - you throw up blood and are very sick.
Removing the tonsils and adenoids will allow your ears to drain naturally, and should stop the pressure and pain when you fly.
You do lose weight, but unless you change your eating habits when you are better, you will just gain it back.

My daughter had her tonsils removed when she was 7 without much trouble. The recovery can be longer than you anticipate and if you aren't careful, a scab can break loose from the site and cause some serious bleeding...
Just know the risks and prepare to take care of yourself.
Best of luck
