Severe sore throat, swollen tonsils.....not strep or mono.?

Severe sore throat, swollen tonsils.....not strep or mono.?I have a severe sore throat, as well as swollen tonsils with white spots on them. My glands in my neck are somewhat swollen also. I went to the doctor a week ago with a minor sore throat, and got a strep test which came back negative. 4 days later I went to the doctor again with a sore throat (worst this time) and they checked me for mono. I have an even worse sore throat today...even more swollen tonsils...and the doctor said that i already had mono in the past, so it couldn't be that either. What could possibly be wrong with me. Strep test came back negative....Mono test came back that i already had it in the past, and it's no longer "active." Doctor says he wants me to come back to see him first thing in the morning. This doesn't sound good. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Obviously your doctor wants to get to the bottom of this which is a good thing so stop stressing. I hope your doctor will order a throat culture to find out what's behind this. Could be viral tonsillitis.
