The tonsils are located in the juncture of the throat and the mouth, under 2 pillars of tissue. They are part of the lymph system, and act as a filter for bacteria and viruses, it is thought. Actually, this is one set of tonsils there are several, but when one speaks of tonsils, these are usually what they mean. Back in the day they were removed routinely, but now it is felt that removal negatively affects the immune system, so removal is rarely recommended
