After 48 hours of Penicillin.......?So after 4 grams (2 grams a day)..I have managed to reduce the fever, but my throat still hurts badly when I swallow, and my gland is still very swollen......is this a sign that the penicillin (Rafapen) isn't working and that I should go back to see a doctor, or am I being hasty?? This is my third tonsillitis/throat infection in the past two months...the first two were treated with Augmentin, but apparently never really killed the streptococcal virus....I am in a foreign country and will be thrilled to recieve any advice about how to proceed....thank you for your interest.........

It is only 48 hours, so it is early. You have to take all the penicillin, for as many days and as many pills as you have. When the days are up make an appointment with your doctor for a "re-check" so he can see if the infection is gone. Maybe he will have to put you on stronger meds. When I had a tooth infection and was on penicillin the infection did not go away and so I was on Clindamycin for another 7-10 days, and then the infection cleared up. Hopefully you are not immunied to the penicillin, they say if you go on it too often it won't help after a while, that is why they don't like to put you on it often. But wait until the time is up and definitely make another appointment with your doctor. Also glands do take a while for the swelling to go down. I remember taking my children to the doctor with swollen glands and their glands did take longer to go down, longer than being on the meds. Good luck!
