what's the difference between tonsil stones and tonsillitis? My throat's been a little sore for about a week now. Well, since it's the changing of the season, I thought it was sinuses, then it go worse and I thought, 'oh another sinus infection' but then my throat was hurting more and more like daggers being pushed towards the back of my mouth.

I asked someone at work what the symptoms of strep were and they said, check your throat and see what it looks like. So I did and found a mass of white bumps and strings all over both of my tonsils. So, I looked on the internet. I seem to share most qualities with tonsillitis, more than just strep throat, but then there's these 'tonsil stones' that also make white bumps on your tonsils as well. But would that cause such pain in my throat, like someone's choking me?

My question here is, what's the difference between tonsil stones and tonsillitis -- and which one would I possibly have...?

What the heck are tonsil stones?
Never heard of them.

Tonsil stones are more chronic and don't just go away on their own and tonsillitis will with medicine. I have the tonsil stones and rinse my mouth everyday with mouth wash and sometimes go in the little spaces with a q-tip to get the stuff out.

needing to have your tonsils removed has been found to be medical qwackery. Research herbal remedies .It's a better alternative than removing body parts or taking drugs with harmful side effects.

I have never heard of tonsil stones but I get tonsillitis on average 5 times a year and it sounds to me like you have the same. Some people get tonsillitis really bad. I usually get the fever and start vomiting within 24hrs to 48 hrs after developing a sore throat and need antibiotics. Its horrible. You could have had a strep throat progress to tonsillitis. Please go to the doctor. If I'm right you should be feeling a bit better by the 2nd to 3rd dose of antibiotics.

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. The white bumps are from the infection that you have...strep throat. That's what's causing the pain in your throat. Infections have to be treated with an antibiotic. Go see your doctor and he will give you some antibiotic and then gargle with salt water for the pain in your throat.

You have tonsillitis. The white bumps and strings are from white blood cells (pus) that are trying to fight an infection. It's not always bacterial and treatable with antibiotics but I would say that yours probably is.
Tonsillitis means inflammation of the tonsils and this hurts like razor blades in your throat.
See a doctor and get some antibiotics.
The tonsil stones are more chronic. I believe they are hardened deposits of white blood cells or possibly slightly calcified debris that get stuck in tonsils. These stones can make you have bad breath. People with tonsil stones have a hard time getting rid of them.
Tonsillitis does not mean you will get the stones.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

To me your tonsils sound swollen. I would go to your dr. Ash him/her about tonsilitis and tonisl stones. Tonsillitis is a fancy word uswed to describe red and swollen tonsils due to an infection. tonsil stones are basically dead bacteria or food particals.
