What was it like having your tonsils out as an adult?

Do you find what you need? Look here!
What was it like having your tonsils out as an adult?I'm 32 and I'd had infections in my tonsils a few times in past few years. So far this year they haven't been infected but I can tell that they swell up a lot. Esp when my allergies are bad or my sinuses are inflamed. At times I'll have problems swallowing food if I don't chew it up small enough.

My ear, nose and throat doctor suggested once that they come out if they keep getting infected so I'm not at that point yet.

I have 3 kids and homeschool. My Ear, nose and throat doctor said it would take me about 10 days or so to heal & he also said I'd be pretty doped up on pain meds too so it would be hard for me to care for my kids. lol

I'd like to hear how it went for you having this done as an adult? Would it be as awful as he makes it sound?

Well, I have to admit that it would have been better if you got them out as a younger child. I got them out at 28 and it did take longer to heal then a little girl I know. It is not that bad though. Don't worry.

I was 17 when I had mine removed and I'll never forget it! The pain was aweful...I cried for 14 days straight and the pain meds didn't help. It was worse when I woke up because the scabs in the back of the throat had time to dry out and get hard. I couldn't eat anything but soup and soft food so I wouldn't tear the scabs. I was terrible...BUT...I haven't gotten sick hardly at all since then and I'm 23 now. No more strep-throat...flu's aren't as bad....no more ear infections or sinus infections....it's worth it in the end!

I'm 37 and just had my tonsils out in January. They had been enlarged for over 15 years. I had problems if I had a cold that they would get really swollen and if I laid on my back they would partially block my throat. I'm sleeping much better now - and I don't have to worry about getting food stuck in my throat any more.

I was out of work for a week. The first couple of days were rough and I was glad I had pain medicine. You are definitely going to need the pain medicine for the first couple of days. After that - it depends on your pain threshhold. My mom came and helped me with my three year old. After a couple of days, though I was outside having my son push me on his tricycle.

If you are in pretty good overall health, you should recover pretty quickly. I went back to work and everyone said I looked great. I told everyone that I've never been able to eat as much ice cream as I wanted - and still lose weight.

I waited until my tonsils were really infected before I went through with the surgery. I think it helped that by the time they needed to come out, I knew they needed to come out and didn't argue with the doctor. It also gave me the chance to see that it was really medically necessary - and not just a doctor telling me to have surgery that may or may not be really necessary just so they could earn some money.

Good luck to you. I think you will be amazed at how much better you breathe and how much better you feel overall once you have the surgery. I think I came through the surgery fine because I was expecting the pain to be horrendous and was afraid that I couldn't talk. I was uncomfortable for a couple of days - and was very glad for my pain medication. But I think giving birth was much more painful and uncomfortable afterwards - if that comparison helps any.
