What do tonsils do?

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them
What do tonsils do?What is the purpose of tonsils and the hangy ball thingy in the back of your throat? (I think its called a uvula) The doctors always told me since I was a kid that I had unusually large tonsils and they should be removed but they never did. Do they serve a purpose at all?

They collect infection so it doesn't go else wheres in your body if they are not prone to infection they should cause no problems.

According to my daughters doctor she said it prevents you from getting real bad colds. They will not take them out because they stated once they do you are prone to getting worse colds. But I dont believe that because I have had to take her to emergency three times because of her tonsils.

At one time they served a purpose, like the appendix, which is slowly being evolved out of existence, due to the sterility being imposed upon us...

Tonsils act as part of the immune system to help protect against infection. In particular, they are believed to be involved in helping fight off pharyngeal and upper respiratory tract infections.

The uvula plays an important role in the articulation of the sound of the human voice to form the sounds of speech.

They serve a purpose but tonsils are not vital. They are lymph nodes in the back of your throat. Lymph nodes are part of your immune system because they store the most white blood cells. But you tonsils are not vital because you have lymph nodes all over your body. Go to webMD and they can explain it in more detail. Hope this helps
