Tonsil removal questions?I am 17 years old. I have tonsil stones and I may be getting my tonsils removed and i'm super scared and nervous! i had a few questions regarding the tonsil removal surgery...

1. is there anything i should do before the surgery?
- like eat food, drink lots of water, take tylonal, etc?
2. what kind of anesthesia do they give during the surgery?
- is it gas, a pill, or what?
3. how long does the surgery take?
4. how long do i have to stay in the hospital after the surgery is done?
5. what kind of pain killers do they prescribe for the pain that follows after the surgery?
6. about how long will i feel pain for?
7. will i be able to talk after the surgery?
8. what kinds of foods should i eat and what foods should i avoid? (i'm a vegetarian, by the way)

any other tips or advice are welcome too!
Thanks!

In England...

1) drink plenty the few days before the op to ensure u r hydrated but remain nil by mouth from the time they tell u on the day of your op otherwise u might not b able to have it
2) usually they put a little needle in the back of your hand (a cannula, if you are scared you can have cream to numb the area before hand) and put medicine into a vein that will send you off to sleep, you are then kept asleep by gas
3) around 30 minutes
4) should be able to go home later that day
5) most likely paracetamol and ibuprofen
6) a couple of days, but take ur painkillers regularly and it wont b too bad
7) yep, but you'll have a sore throat as if you have a throat infection or a bad cold
8) you can eat anything, as it begins to heal foods like toast are good to help remove the scaby bits that will form (no this sounds horrible but it'll help in the long run!)

OOOH.. I can't answer all your questions since I had my tonsils out when I was 5 yrs. old. Back in the Caveman days! lol But I do remember it all. Back then they put you out with ether. Now it's a nice anesthesia that they will put you out with and you won't feel like you're being smothered to death as in the days of old, when they held the cloth full of ether over my mouth and held my arms and legs down.. Really! It's not like that anymore.. When you wake up, you will have a very sore throat. Don't try to talk and only sip liquids and ice cream, jello etc. The hospital will order what you can eat and drink.. You will have a sore throat for at least a week but with pain meds, whatever the doc gives you, you should be able to handle it. I'm not sure of the length of hosptial stay, but with no complications they boot you out of there fast these days.. I do remember that I got a complication after going home.. I had shooting pains going up the sides of my jaws to the ears. The doctor told my mom that it was called pressure pains and it would go away on it's own.. It did but it wasn't fun.. That doesn't happen to everybody.. So, best advice, don't worry. Just get it over with and if in pain, take the meds. You'll be fine.. Good Luck

hey i got my tonsils and adenoids removed when i was 12 so here it goes

they tell you not to eat 24 hours before surgery, to decrease the chances of throwing up while they're operating, but DO drink lots of water

they give general anesthesia, they gave it to me in a shot form (needle) atleast when i did it.. it's basically like sleeping

i dont remember i think surgery only took a few hours, it's a pretty simple process, the doctors have probably done it a million times

you will wake up in a recovery room, and you will be.. very confused lol, they will let you leave later that day if you're doing well
i think they had me pee a certain amount of times before i could go

you will be absolutely miserable for a good week... im sorry to say
when you first wake up from surgery, you wont feel so bad, your throat will just feel swollen like cotton, and oddly enough, you will not feel like eating ice cream... the only thing i wanted to do was drink cold water and sleep
also, they give you a medicine for pain and infection that you will need to take every 4 hours... you wont need a clock, you'll start crying or be in pain the second the medicine wears off

right after the surgery, you'll sound really stupid lol imagine trying to talk with a cork in your mouth, no one will really understand you, i suggest writing things down on a pad

you wont feel like eating at all, you'll probably lose weight, like i did... just anything cool and easy to swallow, lots and lots of cold water! i cant stress that enough

after about 12 days, you'll start feeling normal again, but in the meantime, it's like having a very bad flu, you'll just feel tired and weak, just lay on the couch and relax

good luck!!!
