Severe throat pain with tonsillitis?I went to the doctor today and he prescribed 500 mg. of Penicillin for tonsillitis. I have taken two today. My tonsills are red, swollen, and have white spots on them. I am also having trouble swolling because, it is so painful. I have a headache, fever, fatigue, and chills. I am an adult and have not felt this way in a long time. I also have been taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen about every two hours to try to ease the pain but it is not helping. Does anyone have any other ideas. What else could it be? Should I go back to the doctor tomorrow? I don't know I just feel so bad.

Don't wait. . . call your doctor's answering service and see if your doctor can prescribe a stronger antibiotic. You don't want to play around with a sore throat. I had one that hurt so bad that whenever I would lie down I had to lift my head to swallow. I wanted to run into the wall and knock myself out!!! Good Luck!

the white pus pockets sound like strep throat. If you still feel the same after taking tomorrow's full dosage of antibiotics, go back to the doctor. hope you feel better.

It's going to take more than a few hours to feel better after starting your antibiotic.
To help your throat, try gargling with warm salt water. I do think you may be going a bit heavy on the ibuprofen though. Follow the directions on the bottle. Especially since it isn't helping.
I don't think you need to go to the doctor tomorrow give the penicillin a chance to start working. If you don't feel better Monday morning, then go to the doctor.

Try gargling with salt water. This should be soothing. Penicillin is kind of a sissy antibiotic. You should go to a different doctor and ask for levaquin.

First, taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen about every two hours is TOO much, this will burn your stomach.
Second, you need to give it some time for the Penicillin to work, a couple of days.
I'm a nurse, my advice at this point to ease the pain in your throat is to eat some ice-cream........ this helps constrict the viens in that area and decrease the inflamation (redness) you have.

It takes 24 hours to notice the effects of penicillin. You can rub Vick's on your throat and chest. Cover the neck and chest. Three days after you FINISH the penicillin start eating yogurt to replenish the good germs in the body. Try taking a hot shower to ease the pain. Get well soon!

The medication that you received for the tonsillitis should help but it will take an oral antibiotic 24-48 hours before you will see an improvement. About the motrin - you are taking way to much and it is not good for your liver or stomach. You should only be taking 800mg every 8 hours.
Try Popsicles, ice cream, anything cold. You can also buy some over the counter throat spray that can numb your throat. Drink plenty of fluids.
