No insurance, no money, but acute tonsillitis. Life is in danger, what can I do??My father gets Acute Tonsillitis today. I want to call 911 now, but some told me it costs $ 1,000 for emergency ambulance, plus medical treatment fees. My family really cannot afford out-the-pocket money, and my father does not have insurance. What can I do now??
Thank you!!
I mean, my dad knows he got virus or bacterias that cause tonsillitis. From his experience and other coworkers' advice, he is for sure that. Now, he took Chinese medicine that brought by my cousin. Actually, I drove my dad to Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital half an hour ago, but my cousin told me that it takes hours before my dad gets diagnostic. So I served Chinese Medicine to my father. Take care, everybody! Life is precious!
Thank you all. La_Liona, I will wait for tomorrow and see if my dad feels better after taking Chinese Medicine. He has Swollen on right side of the face (Sorry for my English).
Sara, glad to know that you are fine now. The thing is I do not know if I can get some antibiotics without seeing a doctor. But my idea seems stupid, NOW my dad tried Chinese medicine and hope that cures tonsillitis right away.

Well, for one, do not call the ambulance (it is only about 500 bucks) but it isn't worth it. Drive him there, and tonsillitis is not that much money out of pocket as it is a routine surgery. A doctor will take care of it very quickly. If it is truly a life or death situation, then no money can substitute his life, you will always be wondering why you didn't pay the money because you lost your dad.

What country are you in? USA? Is there an HMO near you? He might just need antibiotics. My tonsils were so bad I wanted to shoot myself, the pain was so bad, but it turned out strong antibiotics helped. A doctors visit is not too much, there must be a walk-in clinic you can go to.

Take your father to the Emergency room yourself. He needs antibiotics and quickly, if indeed he has this. You will not have the ambulance costs, but can get medicaid to pay for his treatment. 50 million Americans do not have insurance. One MUST get treatment for certain health issues, so I would just insist that he go to the ER with you right now. Good Luck and keep us posted on how he is doing!!

If you have no money and can't afford medical treatment, how did he get the diagnosis? Was it a Dr or just a guess based on symptoms?
Best bet is to find a DR who will treat him. They may be able to help you guys get assitance to get him better. Good luck. It's always scary when a loved one is very sick.

I had acute tonsillitis myself several years ago. Go to the emergency room, or if your local store has a nurse practitioner stand you could go there. While tonsillitis isn't typically life threatening, it should be fine to avoid the ambulance and drive to the doc's. Most likely your father will be prescribed antibiotics (I had to go through 2 rounds of a super-antibiotic to get rid of it), and your doc can prescribe a generic.
The only time you need a surgery for tonsillitis (where the the tonsils are removed entirely) is if the tonsillitis recurs 3 or more times in a year. Even then, it's not necessary, just more convenient.
If your father isn't working, or doesn't make much money, your local government may provide an insurance option which he may qualify for. A hospital emergency room legally has to treat you, and will most likely work out a payment arrangement with you.
