Is it possible for strep or tonsillitis to still get worse the first day after starting antibiotics?I recently had sinusitis and was on Ceftin for 10 days. The Ceftin cleared up the sinus infection, but over the last couple days of taking Ceftin my tonsils were starting to get covered in white spots. A few days later they were covered in even more white stuff, so I went to my doctor who took a look at my throat and my very swollen lymph nodes on the right side (Very large and visibly swollen, although no longer very painful.) and tested me for Mono, which came back negative. He then did a throat culture test (Still awaiting results.) and said he thought it was strep throat. He started me on a 10-day course of Augmentin 875mg, twice a day.
I started treatment yesterday and today I've noticed that my throat isn't doing any better. It's more sore than it was yesterday, AND there's even more white gunk on the right side.
I've read strep usually improves a day or two after starting treatment.
Is it possible for the infection to still worsen for a day or two after starting treatment?
On a side note, I'm pretty sure it's not Oral Thrush...
Thrush usually starts in the cheeks/on your tongue, and moves back towards the tonsils. I've also been eating a decent amount of yogurt to help maintain a good balance within my body to help prevent that. I am fairly susceptible to tonsil problems quite often anyway...
Also, oral thrush wouldn't cause swollen lymph nodes, if I'm not mistaken... Either way, I've had the throat culture test done and will get the results on Monday... That will determine if it is indeed Strep, Tonsillitis, or Thrush. Guess we'll find out, eh?
On a side note, my friend's sister had strep throat the other day when we all hang out. I ended up having to sit next to her at the diner we went to, so it's a possibility if she coughed/sneezed anywhere, the droplets could've gotten in my food and I could've caught strep there.
We shall discover the answer to what this is, soon!

Sure, it is. Give it another day, and if it isn't at least a little better by then, call your doctor.

It is possible for it to get worse while the augmentin is getting in to your system. It could have to do with the ceftin you were on for the sinusitis. It it doesn't get any better in a day or so, call your doctor back again.

Yes this is very possible....it take a while for the antibiotics to kill all of the infection.....that's why you stay on them for many many days...until they're finished. You should be feeling better usually about the night of the second day, or the third day.

I've had problems in the past with my tonsils getting infected. It takes 48 hours for the antibiotics to even start working. So yes it can get worse while you are taking them. You should have improvement in 72 hours if you don't call your doctor again. In the mean time gargle with warm salt water, that will help. Take care of yourself, and get better quick..

I always feel worse as the treatment start to work. I have always suspected that things get worse before better. I know that you are supposed to be no longer contagous after 48 hours on an antibiotic. Definitley follow-up if not better in a couple of days.

Please see a Doctor again, Only the doctor or his nurse should answer that question for you. It could've turned into something else !!!

Sounds like "thrush". Ask your doctor. Not all antibiotics work for all people for all infections. If one isn't working, go for the next. This is not something you need to suffer from. Good luck.
