I have sore swollen tonsils, sore swollen lymph node on left neck, fever, neg strep, high WBC, what is it?

Hi,I did the following:
I have sore swollen tonsils, sore swollen lymph node on left neck, fever, neg strep, high WBC, what is it?This is kind of long, bear with me! I began having a sore throat about one week ago, which spread to swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, a low grade fever. Went to the doctor three days later thinking it could be strep or mono, my sister had mono about 3-4 weeks ago. Both strep and mono tests came back neg. I had a similar infection about 8 months ago that cleared up with antibiotics. Dr. prescribed a z-pack this time and a shot of rocephin. I started to feel better a couple of days after starting the antibiotics. Then on Saturday, went to an outdoor concert...in memphis...in the middle of the summer...bad idea....I am afraid it has set me back. I went home from work today with a 101.5 F fever and back pain. I am concerned. I had protected vaginal sex and unprotected oral sex two days before the sore throat began. I didn't think much of it, until reading that HSV-1 and chlamydia can cause tonsillitis. I am going back to the dr tomorrow, but just wanted some peace of mind tonight. Does this sound familiar to anyone??

There are any number of viral infections that can cause all your symptoms. Viruses are not suceptible to antibiotics, although taking one can get you some temporary improvement overall because it helps take the load off your immune system. The fact you have an enlarged lymph node suggests you have a viral infection, not bacterial. The antibiotics then would have made you feel better, but not cured the underlying problem. Viral infections can take several weeks to beat off, under ideal circumstances they usually take at least 2 weeks. In your case, you felt well enough to dive back into a full life, but were not sufficiently recovered for your body to handle the demand. To recover from a viral infection, you just have to rest and eat right. You can't keep burning the candle at both ends. Your doctor can certainly do swabs for both oral herpes and chlamydia- but those are only rarely the cause of your type problem. More than likely it's viral, and they will not be able to identify the exact culprit. You may get another round of antibiotics to help shore up your immune system against anything opportunistic, but will still need to rest and chill for a while to recover. Until then, outdoor concerts, late hours, and a full social schedule probably aren't good ideas.

Check your blood sugar just for the heck of it, it takes a minute.
