How long does tonsillitis last?I was diagnosed with mono, and have had really bad tonsillitis for about 5 days. I can hardly swallow it hurts so bad. I was just wondering how long this part of mono lasts because I don't know how much longer I can take it!!

i once had tonsilitis for 6 months. It does hurt really badly.

It can linger for quite some time. Some people have it for a month or so. It can also come back. Gargle w/warm salt water several times a day, eat softened ice cream, suck on ice pops, as this all helps w/pain. Also, use throat lozenges to suck on to help w/pain also. Hope you feel better soon. My son had it when at college. I know he had high fever also and felt extremely exhausted.

When I had mono I had it for 6 long months. I couldn't eat and even drinking anything hurt like crazy. I'm glad I had my tonsils out when I was 12 otherwise I would've had a severe problem actually swallowing. I had called the center for disease control and was told that mono never totally leaves your system.

Tonsillitis generally lasts until it is treated with strong enough antibiotics. I once had tonsillitis almost constantly for 12 months- in the end they had to take them out simply because there were no antibiotics strong enough or worth using to get rid of the infection.
Usually after a course of amoxycillin or a mixture of a amoxycillin and another antibiotics symptoms should start to relive themselves in 3-7 days. You may need to take antibiotics for 2 weeks.
To relieve symptoms, try an iodine throat gargle and anit-inflammatory lozenges

I had tonsillitis a long time ago, its last about 2 weeks. Taking mexican medicines, I don't know why american medicines take longer.
