Do I have tonsillitis or glandular fever?

Do I have tonsillitis or glandular fever?About 10 days ago I noticed my glands in my neck were swollen, a few days later I was throwing up my food, had aching joints, severe headaches. Eventually I got so unwell in work I had to make an emergency appointment at the doctors... When I got there I told the doctor my symptoms, he took a look down my throat and said "It sounds and looks like a case of glandular fever or bacterial tonsillitis... so we'll just treat what we can" he then gave me a prescription for a 10 day course of antibiotics (penicillin)

Now, from what I've since read in my hours at home doing nothing but feeling sorry for myself, my symptoms (nausea, chronic fatigue, loss of appetite etc) are more linked to glandular fever and if so was my doctor correct to put me on antibiotics and not test for glandular fever if he wasn't sure?
Upon re-reading it seems I'm just asking if my doctor did the right thing... This is not what I intended at all and apologies, I am very very tired.

What I want to know is how can I know if I have glandular fever OR tonsillitis considering the symptoms are very much similar...

N.B since I started on my course of penicillin I have develped a read non itchy rash... any ideas?

The test for mono (or glandular fever) is not all that accurate. There is no good treatment (beyond over the counter anti-inflammatory meds) for mono either. The body cures itself, it just takes time.

The test for strep throat (bacterial tonsillitis) is not all that accurate either. The treatment for strep is penicillin. The risk of NOT treating strep is bad - things like rheumatic fever can happen.

Penicillin will not likely hurt you if it is mono (barring unforeseen allergic reactions), and will help if it is strep. I think what your doc did was fine.
