Did I lose a piece of my tonsils?A few days ago I started having swelling of my tonsils as well as my cervical glands. This prompted me to visit my physician and he prescribed me antibiotics and steroids to reduce my tonsil hypertrophy. Earlier today some mucus went down the wrong tube and I began coughing. After this had subsided, I blew my nose and found blood in my mucus, I cleared my throat and spat it out into the sink and found the same. I cleared my throat once more and spat out a pink piece of tissue about 1cm x 0.5cm and began to bleed more from the back of my throat. I could not determine where exactly the blood was coming from. I ended up going to the ER and was diagnosed with Mononucleosis. They really didn't address my questions about what I spat up so I was wondering if I could get any input as to what this was.
It should also be noted that my throat/tonsils felt better after this all happened, and they feel fine now.

It's possible that you had what is called a tonsillolith which is actually a tonsil stone. This is a combination of pus, white blood cells, bacteria, and calcium that forms a stone like structure. Some people get these chronically but they are harmless.
However, in the face of mono you may have had a "mimic" tonsillolith in the sense that people with mono get a membrane in their pharynx often and if enough of this gathered in the back of your throat it can solidify into what looks like tissue. It's really just just pus that is solid, probably originating in the tonsillar crypts.
Hope this helps
