The risk of having side effects like those is not much less than the overall risk of having a bacterial cause for tonsillitis. Before you ask which antibiotic to use, it's a good idea to ask if any antibiotic at all is a good idea. Often it isn't. But if you need one, the preferred antibiotic is still plain old penicillin.

Oral Penicillin for Streptococcus is effective (Penvik, Oracin-K, Pen-V).
But those are supposed to be taken 6 hourly.
Ciprofloxacin & 2nd generation cephalosporins(cephalexin) are also prescribed now a days. (though may be not so rational in the terms of emergence of drug resistance)
