Is Augmentin an effective treatment for tonsillitis caused by virus not bacteria?I'm aware that it can produce a rash if it is caused my bacteria, but what I cannot find out is if it effectively treats viral infection.

augmentin is a penicillin based antibiotic (specifically amoxycillin) and is good for tonsilitis.most antibiotics arent that effective against viral illnesses. you wouldnt have been prescribed it if you didnt need it as everything comes down to finance and augmentin isnt cheap

No, I don't think so. Augmentin is an antibiotic, not an anti-viral. It only kills bacteria, not any virus. It may have a placebo effect, though, where people feel better just by the fact that they are taking a medication. Sometimes a viral infection can also have a bacterial super-infection (a viral infection with a bacterial infection). In this case the Augmentin only kills the bacteria, still.

A virus cannot be treated. Only the symptoms. So if a doctor prescribed Augmentin, either your illness is bacterial or you need to see another doctor.
