What are indication of tonsillectomy in adult?i am 44 year old and i have hypertrophic tonsil and post nasal discharge is it indication of tonsillectomy?

Having no tonsls would be the first clue :) :p. If youur asking if this means you need your tonsils out its best to ask a doc. I know they don't like to do it to adults.

Absolute indications for tonsillectomy

Airway obstruction occurs when the tonsils are so enlarged that they cause chronic upper respiratory tract obstruction.
Sleep apnea is the intermittent closure of the airway at the pharynx causing episodes of apnea or 'breath holding' (gagging) during sleep as well as snoring.
Tonsillar malignancy is a carcinoma of the tonsils, which is not common, but surgical removal is necessary to prevent the spread.

Relative indications for tonsillectomy

Recurrent acute tonsillitis is the most common relative indication for tonsillectomy in children and adolescents, especially when there is recurrent sore throat due to streptococcal infections (strep throat). This is usually considered when the tonsillitis occurs despite antibiotics.
Chronic tonsillitis is more common in young adults and may be aggravated by smoking, acid reflux (GERD) and other ENT (ear, nose and throat) conditions like post nasal drip.
Quinsy or peritonsillar abscess can be managed by incision and drainage, which is the treatment of choice, but in a child there is also likely to be a history of chronic tonsillitis and tonsillectomy is then advisable.
Tonsillitis causing febrile convulsions.
Systemic diseases caused by beta-hemolytic streptococcus infection, such as rheumatic fever or nephritis.

tonsil stone or lolith, it'll come out evetually, it harmless just gives you bad breath, you can try to pry it out with a tooth pick its safe to do so

Why are my tonsils so big?My tonsils are really big & i always get sore throats & its swollen and big in my neck area too. Its been like this for a long while now & i've been tested for strep and came up negitive. so why are they like this? do i need to get my tonsils taken out?

you could have some other kind of infection that require antibiotics. You should see a Dr to get a prescription. Here is a home remedy that worked for me when my tonsils were like this years ago-No kidding! Take one regular or light cup of yogurt and crush or mince up 3 cloves garlic and eat..Yuck! I know, but it works like a miracle drug. Do this around 3 times a day and your tonsils will go down like a deflated balloon. Or you can put the garlic in some food, but make sure you eat enough to get the full benefits and gargle with salt water and a spoon full of listerine. It works, if you can stand the smell and detoxifies the body too.

Swollen Tonsils and Lymph Nodes, Abdomen Pain, what's wrong with me?About 5 days ago I got a fever, which just finished yesterday. I would be shivering, my teeth would be chattering like crazy unless I got under like 3 layers of clothing and two large blankets, then I'd get extremely warm. Through all of that I never had a thermometer so I have no idea what my temperature could have been. About a week ago my tonsils started to swell up, they're currently pretty big, with a small gap between each one. I can feel myself talking different and swallowing is pure agony.

A few minutes ago I was urinating and my abdomen started to tighten and when I coughed my stomach pained quite a bit. I'm going to the Doctor in an hour, but what does this sound like?? I'm really curious as I've never experienced a sickness quite like this.

Home Remedies For Pink Eye And Sore Throat?It started 4 days ago when I rubbed my eye and scratched it abit, it wasn't too long after I had woken up from a long night of crying so I had "sleep" in my eyes. It got a bit red but i figured I'd just scratched it a bit. We went on vacation for 4 days and the first night my eye got a little redder. We thought I had pink eye so to avoid giving it to the kid's I got some over the counter pink eye drops.My eyes have gotten like a permanent crust and are reallllly red. I woke up 2 days ago and my left eye was swollen shut (i have a partially lazy eyelid so it really wasnt that swollen) If i layed down there was major pressure over my eye in my head and i had a head ache for 3 days straight. When I wake up in the morning my eyelids are really swollen, I tried the perscription drops my sister used when she had pink eye, but now I have a really bad sore throat (might just be from yelling for like 3 days straight at a theme park but my tonsils are swollen and it will turn into strep). I've gargled salt water, avoided talking, and took a spoonful of lemon juice, brandy and sugar (gpa's remedy) I've tried hot tea and everything I can think of. I have a 4 year old sister so I really want to get rid of this

They wanted to take me to the doc but we were in another state and i didnt have an insurance card. I assured them I would be okay until we got home..My mom was asleep when my gma dropped me and my sis off and she took a sleeping pill so she cant drive and I cant see to drive..She wont take me anyway

The best treatment for "pink eye" is erthromycin ointment and you need an RX for that. Pink eye; conjunctivitis is very contagious. Wash our hands well each time you touch your eye(s).
You can use a boric acid solution which you can get over the counter, but I can't promise it will cure it.

Sore throat and a white spot on tonsil?So, for the past two days I've had a sore throat. I thought it was because I scalded it with hot coffee, but it hasn't gone away. Just now I looked at my throat in the mirror and there is a white spot on my left tonsil. I've also been having some dizziness and been noticeably more tired lately.

One final thing. It's hard to tell whether or not I have a temperature, because my thermometer has been reading my temperature at 96.5 degrees for a couple of months now. No idea what that's about, but right now it's reading 97.8, which I guess would mean I have a temperature compared to normal, but I don't know whether or not to trust it. Sorry, I've got to make things difficult. If it helps at all, I'm not really having any coughing or sneezing or any of that good stuff.

I've looked at pictures online, and it sort of looks similar to tonsillitis, but I only have a small white spot as opposed to my tonsils being coated with them, and I don't have a hoarse voice or difficulty swallowing. I dunno, I guess I could be in the early stages? Maybe?

It sounds like you have tonsillitis. You should go to your doctor to get some penicillin or they may suggest having them removed. It will last about 2 weeks and is quite painful so try and get treated as quickly as you can.

have them removed! It hurts a lot more as an adult, but it will stop you having this again.

it's kind of like other illnesses. you get it from being exposed to it. some people are more susceptible. it can cause complications, which is why they used to just remove tonsils all the time and if you got it, ever. i had it once from being around someone who had it and never got it again after that. i guess i probably didn't have it too badly. it was kind of like any other throat infection. i would suggest, if you're having problems, going back to the doc and discussing options with her. that's what doctors do. it's their job to tell you the effects of things going on with your body.

take the treatment the doctor gave you.if this is recurrent you may need to have them removed(tonsillectomy) as they may be fibrotic.

Why do i have white spots on my tonsils after i had a sore throat?Yesterday my throat was pretty sore, and today it is also, but earlier i was checking out my teeth and realized that in the back of my mouth on my tonsils there are white spots that look like they are filling cracks in my tonsils. I still have a sore throat, and i have looked this up online and some say it may be strep throat and some say it may be tonsillitis. I am not sure what it is because in my 14 years of life, i have never seen anything like this until today. Can anyone help me?
Actually, to add to this, i did go to the doctor, its some kind of pharengitus. ive only had if for about a week and the white spots have disappeared. Thank you for all your help!

I have had the same thing many times in the past. I get tonsillitis or strep throat every year. The white pockets are puss. It typically suggests infection. When you go to the doc he/she will use a large cotton swab and take a culture of your tonsils. This does not hurt just makes you gag a bit.They can do a instant strep test. There is also a strep test they send off to lab.You may try gargling with salt water.( Salt diluted with warm water.) Hope this helps! Hope you feel better soon.

The internet is right. Right spots on your tonsils means that your tonsils are infecting. This could be a virus or a bacterial infection. To fix this, you need to go to your doctor. Do you have any other signs of illness? Your doctor will do a culture and test to see if the strep bacteria is there. She or he will be able to tell from the rest of your symptoms and medical history if it's Strep or Tonsillitis. If its a bacterial infection, they'll give you antibiotics and you'll be better soon, but sadly, if its a virus, you have to tough it out and let it finish it's course on its own because there are not medicines for viruses. I actually went to the emergency room yesterday because of this right here. I have had this same thing all my life. I cough and these gross smelling rotten looking pellets come off my tonsils. Well mine has just become badly infected and I now also have a chronic cough and chronic pharyngitis. I am going to a specialist on Monday. The doctor told me I basically have two choices. I can have them taken out or live with the pain and get everyone around me sick. Because of this my tonsils carry many bacteria causing viruses and infections. This is also why my husband has been staying so sick lately we were told as well. So I most likely will be having them removed. I suggest you see a doctor because the reading I have been doing suggest that they can cause other problems such as throat cancer.

I have tonsillitis, what can I take to take away the pain and how long will it last?I've had it for nearly a week now, to swallow is unbearable and everytime I swallow its the worst pain I've ever experienced. To eat or drink is out of the question-the pain is so bad that Its undescribable.

I havent eaten or drinken properly in days.
I've tried icecreams but it just seemed to irritate it more and I've tried soup but it hurts so much that I cant bear to take it. I've also tried Jello but I dont like Jello so its not really working.

I'm taking:
Paracetamol every four hours
clarithromycin paediatric suspension [twice a day-one in the evening and one in the morning]
But for the clarithromycin paediatric suspension the after taste is so horrific that it makes me vomit continuously and choke to high heavens.

Im allergic to Penicillin so cant take any of that.

Im 15 and its my first time having Tonsillitis. Does anybody know any medicines or remedies that will take it away, and roughly how long it will carry on for?

White bumps on my tonsils after eating popcorn...?The past 2 times I've eaten popcorn, I've gotten a white bump on what I guess are my tonsils in the back of my throat. The dont hurt but they seem to be raised since I can feel them. The last one fell off (suddenly disapeared) after 3 days. I had some popcorn tonight and now my other tonsil has the same thing going on. I'm thinking maybe the kernel shells are making a small cut when I'm swollowing and then it gets a minor infection...? Anyone ever heard of this? Very strange.

To me the strange part is your checking out your tonsils when you're eating popcorn! Other than that yep, it's strange, perhaps a conversation to have with your dr. next time you go. Obviously it's not a major health issue or you wouldn't be eating popcorn. Good luck!

I know that in my tonsils (and everyone I've talked to) after a while, white stuff starts forming in the holes of your tonsils (I think its food buildup) and it also happens when its cold, that could be what you are talking about because they come out sometimes by eating, or you can remove them yourself.
I went to my doctor for them because I was worried, but she said it was normal and it happens to everyone, some people just notice and others its hidden.
The next time that happens, try poking it with the soft part of a Q-Tip, and see what happens. It could also just be popcorn stuck in the holes in your tonsils. Not everyone has them, but most do.

You need to have it checked out by your doctor. If its something serious like strep if you have it too long it could mess up your kidneys.

Can I still get a Middle ear infection with my tonsils and adenoids removed?I have what I believe to be a Middle ear infection. I have read other questions and visited webmd and all the info i have found is it should clear up within a few days. Also I read that it happens because of inflamed adenoids. But when i was 4 yrs old I had both my tonsils and adenoids removed.

your tonsils and adenoids are not located in your ear!

You can still get middle ear infections. It's more common and frequent with inflammed adenoids because the cause pressure and bacteria to back up into the middle ear. But, even without them, you can still get it!

Swollen tonsil on right side?I have too many medical issues. Anyway, Monday I came down with body aches and a moderate fever. I stayed home from school Tuesday with those symptoms plus an awful headache and a swollen tonsil. Today everything else is gone, but my right tonsil is still really swollen, hurts a little bit, and looks sorta red and I think has a little white stuff on it. It really doesn't hurt that bad, but it feels like some thing's stuck in my throat, and talking is awkward, it makes my voice sound weird. I can still swallow and everything. Since I can't exactly go to the doctor today since it's closed, but are there any remedies for home that could reduce this swelling?

Gargle with a mixture of 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 pint warm water. This will help clear out the debris in your tonsils. Feel better!

Strep throat is a Streptococcus Bacterial Infection..
This bacteria lives just fine on throat tissue..
It is not limited to the tonsils / sinuses...

You can get strep throat regardless of whether or not you have your tonsils. Removing your tonsils helps more with allergic type/sinus conditions, as they can become imflamed which can cause discomfort, pain, or difficulty breathing (especially at night, causing snoring or sometimes sleep apnea). Strep is a bacteria that can colonize pretty much anywhere in or on your body, so it can still colonize in the throat even without tonsils there.

Strep throat is caused by the streptococcus bacteria, which infect the mucous membranes which line the entire throat- not just the tonsils. In cases where there is reoccuring strep throat, removing the tonsils lessens the chances of it happening but they can't eliminate it altogether. If the tonsils are not functioning correctly, they become homes to the bacteria and sources of reinfection themselves. So removing them cuts out one source of the infection, but not all of them. Strep throat can occur year round, but is more prevalent in fall and winter. It's spread by droplets, and you pick up the bacteria on your hands usually from doors and such. That's why it's so important to wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your face and mouth unless they have just been washed. Removing your tonsils removed a source of bacteria living inside your body, but it didn't remove the bacteria from the rest of the world. If you come in contact with it, you can still get strep throat.

does getting your tonsils removed damage your singing voice?i just need to know just in case i might need to find something else to fix my throat problems without getting them removed. I love to sing and i will do anything to keep my voice as amazing as i can.

tonsils dont really do anything thats why you remove them so easily. At some point people get them removed but i doubt it will permanetly affect your singing

It didn't change mine, I had mine removed in my early 30's, and it didn't seem to make any difference to my voice whether speaking or singing.

Not remotely - your voice is dictated by your vocal chords, which are deep down in your gullet. Your tonsils are at the back of your throat and not remotely connected to your voice. Hospitals are reluctant to remove tonsils these days as they filter bacteria that could be more harmful for you. You may suffer more regularly from tonsilar infections, but these are easily handled by gargling with diluted salt water, or better still, very diluted TCP. However, if a doctor has recommended their removal, then go along with it safe in the knowledge that your vocal chords remain unaffected.

No, there is no other effect than maybe a slight improvement (decrease of "stuffy" or "nasally blocked" voice as enlargened tonsils do not block the airways anymore).

It will not affect your voice or damage it in any way, but it might change your vocal timber and range, in other words, you could sound different. So be sure you tell the doctor that you are a singer. There are certain aspects that need to be taken into consideration. I can't remember exactly what, but a doctor told me. And one of my teachers in high school removed her tonsils and she sounded so... bright, her voice was too high ans squeaky.

When I was little I had them removed. I am on the radio and people tell me that I have "good pipes". So it does not effect your singing. Best wishes.

I'm guessing you had an infection, which is now gone, and now you're left with common tonsil stones. These are dead bacteria and food particles, so they're not bad, except in aesthetics and smell. Don't stick a toothbrush in there or anything pointed to get them out...that's just asking to swallow it or rupture something. Instead, get a 99 cent spray bottle in the samples aisle at any store. Fill it with warm (NOT HOT) water and put it on the highest setting, meaning a stream of water opposed to a misting spray. Use a flashlight and point the nozzle at your tonsil and spray a couple times. Should come right out.

Sore throat with other symptoms...?I started with a sore throat a few days ago. I went into the doctor today since I wanted to get rid of whatever this is as quickly as possible. They did a throat culture and said neg for strep. Otherwise, they don't know and want me back in after 5 or so days if I don't get better. They prescribed "Magic Mouthwash," whatever that is.

Here are my symptoms:
Sore throat,
white spots on tonsils,
multiple tiny sores/white spots in my mouth, tongue and gums
swollen gums (not bleeding like gingivitis),
whole body tenderness,
slight pain in chest (esp when I breathe deep),
very little presence of appetite,
very little energy,
fever last night of 99.8,
cold chills all the time.

Also two of my recent piercings are really swollen and tender too, tho I'm not 100% that those are related. Who knows.

Does this sound familiar? Please, I feel terrible and am possibly starting a new job soon.. Need to feel great for it!

Canker sores on my tonsil??Is it safe to say my severe painful throat is caused by cankers on my tonsils? 5 days ago, I had a fever and body aches, and some sinus. All these have eventually subsided but a really severe soar throat persists especially during eating/drinking. I had my culture swabbed for strep and it came back negative. I can see a few blister like spots on my right tonsil, and just so happens the right side of my throat is EXTREMELY painful when eating....almost to a point where I'd rather not eat. I've had cankers on my inner lip, but never on my throat or tonsil. This is possibly the worst throat pain I've ever felt. It's been 4 days and it has not yet let up, how long do i have to go? Are these normal symptoms of cankers?

My son just had this it is called Herpangina, and is caused by the cocksackie virus not sure if the spelling is right, but it is normal, it should go away in a few days. Just google it.

It's probably a viral problem. They are probably not canker sores, but blisters caused by inflammation of your tonsil. I had the exact some problem, and sadly, it lasted for about two weeks, but then again I am a college student and didn't get the best medical care. It sounds like you may even have mono. Please go to see your doctor to get a mono test. Please get better soon!

My voice is gone, any remedies?Well, not really. 2 weeks ago i became pretty sick, and also lost my voice. when i talked it was extremely hoarse. i went to the doctor, they gave my antibiotics for 10 days and i talk normal now. the thing is, i used to sing high notes and i was able to scream in a really high pitched voice. but now, it's impossible. this is really bothering me because it's already been two weeks and still i can't sing high notes yet, nor scream. what do i do? any remedies?my tonsils are a little swollen too, but they don't hurt.

How do you calm an itchy throat? quickly!?I have been sick for a while with swollen tonsils and lymph nodes. I have been coughing up mucous and had a runny/stuffy nose. Now there is hardly any swelling and hardly any mucous (accept in the morning after not taking meds all night) Anyway all the sickness and coughing left my throat and chest feeling itchy and its making me cough even more. Cough syrups not helping too much neither is water or sitting in steam. highly irritating. help.

drink more water, use a nasal rinse, run a vaporizer when you sleep, take your meds EXACTLY as prescribed, and follow up with your doctor.

Benadryl works wonders in calming an itchy throat, if you don't mind getting sleepy after taking it. I know this because I'm very allergic to cashews and pistachios, so I never leave home without Benadryl. I get an itchy throat if I happen to eat anything containing either of those two nuts or anything that has been cross contaminated, plus I start throwing up. My throat stops itching after I take the Benadryl, but I still get very sick. If you really need quick relief for an itchy throat, take liquid Benadryl, it's fast acting. You can also try Cepacol throat spray. It's numbing, so be careful not to get it on your tongue or your cheeks. Drink a lot of water and some hot tea. You might also want to gargle hot salt water or hot water with lemon in it. I hope you get better soon. :)

A few weeks ago I did something I regret truly with all my heart. I've prayed over and over for God to forgive me and wash away my sins and I just hope he did<3
I gave me first and last bj... and I am never going to ever do it again... until I get married at least!
So the day after, literally the next day I had swollen tonsils and I felt sore all over... also i had to keep spitting my mouth felt kind of dry

So 2 days later I start getting like a red rash and it moves throughout my body...

But it could be pharyngeal (throat) gonorrhoea. Go and get tested, get treated and you will be fine.

It sounds like you might have a throat infection or severe tonsillitis, which are more than likely not related to the oral sex.
I would suggest going to your primary care physician to get checked out.
I don't believe you'd be seeing HIV symptoms this early on.

I don't think this is HIV but it sounds like you have a pretty nasty infection in your throat. Could be an infection of gonorrhea or chlamydia in your throat. Defiantly get this checked out by a doctor as soon as possible.

His tonsils are infected, he needs to see a doctor. He can go to an emergency hospital and be examined there. He needs antibiotics to clear all of that up. The infection seems from what you have shared has now spread to his ears.

He can gargle with warm salt water, for this condition it is the best thing to do. The chloride in table salt is know to eliminate bacteria.

Ooh nasty sounds like tonsilitis to be honest. Are your toils quite puffed up? Either way if you go see your doctor they will most likely give you antibiotic which will clear it up in no time. In the mean time try gargling with dispersable aspirin (but don't swallow it) or warm salty water if you don't have any or can't take aspirin and take paracetamol to help ease the pain.

I agree with the other responses that said "Strep". White spots are the classic symptom and you need antibiotics. Don't let it go or it could turn into a worse infection.

yes, you need to go to the doctor. it sounds like you are taking care of yourself, and that's good, but a week is a pretty long time to not get better, especially if you are still running fever. tonsilitus and strep throat look a lot alike, even to a nurse or doctor. to determine if you have strep, they have to take a throat culture ( with a swab). if your tonsils are infected, antibiotics won't help. with both illnesses, there are white streaks in the back of your throat. if it's your tonsils, most of the dots ( puss pockets) will be on your tonsils, and if it's strep, most of the streaks or dots will be at the back of your throat. no, don't poke at them, but you can gargle salt water to help your throat. you didn't mention if anyone else you have been around has caught it... strep throat is very contagious. if you're not better in 2 or 3 days, you need to go to the doctor.

Are these doctors stupid or what?Friday I took my daughter to urgent care because she was developing some signs of pink eye. My doctor's office didn't have any openings so I decided to go to UC. Sure enough she had pink eye. They ordered her an antibiotic called Cefdinir. She had never been on this before. After taking the anti that day and the next she started getting diarrhea. She had diarrhea Sunday 2 times Monday and 1 time on Tuesday. I called Tuesday to inform them of my daughters loose stools. When I got a call back from that office I was told that kind of antibiotic doesn't cause diarrhea and that she had something else along with pink eye. I raised my eye brows and thought there is no way it couldn't be this antibiotic causing it because she hadn't bee eating a whole lot because the antibiotic caused loss of appetite. I did some research and I keep finding diarrhea to be a side effect.

Next thing I went in on Monday to get looked at because I thought I was starting to develop some signs of pink eye. They said it didn't look to be pink eye but they wanted to treat it in case it was. They called in Erythromycin antibiotic ointment. I haven't taken that kind of antibiotic before. The directions read. Make a pocket with your lower eye lid put and inch of it in 4x a day for 10 days. I was confused because that seemed like a ridiculous amount of ointment. I put 4 doses in that day. The next morning my nose was stuffy, my tonsils were swollen, I had achey muscles and joints. My eyes and face felt puffy, headache and nausea. I was concerned I was having a reaction to the ointment so I went in to get it looked at. I was told it wasn't an allergic reaction that I possibly have tonsillitis. I didn't understand how they could be so sure. I didn't have any of these symptoms before taking this ointment. I feel like these guys have no idea what they are doing. They prescribed me another antibiotic pill form and allergy pills because I was told it was allergies as well.

Thats what you get for getting all in arms about pink eye.

It's only a bit of eye gunk, I leave it to clear itself up or if that doesn't work, I get antibiotic eye drops.

Welcome to modern medicine. Doctors treat symptoms, not root causes. I also had a VIRAL conjunctivitis. Now that was exciting. Antibiotics do not work on viral infections. The humoral immune system has "B" cells and "T" cells. These are reciprocal. So when you turn on the "B" cells to produce macrophages and kill bacteria, you turn OFF the "T" cells that fight viral infections and cancer. So I had to let my immune system deal with the viral infection. The eye doctor had nightmares about what my eye looked like from the infection. He gave me steroids to deal with the problem.

The way I got the problem was from my daughter who had been in the hospital and picked up the infection there from the doctor who examined her that did not wash her hands before seeing my daughter. Now that, was a very stupid doctor.

ALL Antibiotics kill the bacteria in your intestine that makes up about 80% of your immune system. So when you take any antibiotic, you have destroyed most of your immunity and are relying on that antibiotic to get enough "B" cells from your humoral immune system to go after a particular bacteria at the cost of bad functioning intestinal problems. Tonsils are part of the LYMPHATIC system that rids the body of dead cells, cancer cells, and debris from infections. Antibiotics destroy the intestinal flora and so your small intestines are going to be without these bacteria that help digest your food, especially at the brush border cell sites in your small intestines that contribute heavily to proper carbohydrate digestion. This bad digestion will cause food intolerances and allergic reactions to foods containing proteins.

For these doctors to say what they did, is understandable because they have NO clue about how the body works in regard to nutrition, detoxing, and many aspects of healing.

Sounds like a viral conjunctivitis. Since you possibly got it from your daughter. Since it very contagious, you might want to give vitamins or improve the rest of the family immune system.

Usually we treat viral conjunctivitis is treated with symptom relieving only, and that is using an eye drop medicine only. Even if we use ointment (example: in case of bacterial conjunctivitis), we would recommend the patient to use it at night before sleeping, therefore only once a day, not 4, and still helped by using the eye drop.

How can I tell if I have strep throat or not besides looking at my tonsils?This morning I woke up with a sore throat, and I have a stuffy nose, cough, and I've been sneezing
along with it. I'm not sure if its strep throat since I've been getting strep lately like every 3 months.

I had it 2 months ago, then in December and it keeps seeming to come back.

Is there any way I can tell if I have strep throat or not without looking to see if
I have white spots on my tonsils.

The last time I had strep throat I don't think I had white spots on them, but the doctors
said they were really red so if its a regular sore throat itd be red also.

if you do have strep throat it should be extremely hard for you to swallow, cough, and even speak. Check to see if you have any pain underneath your jawline when you press near it...you may just have to go see a doctor if it doesnt get better to be on the safe side. try cough drops and thera-flu

The only way to know for sure is to have your throat swabbed at the Dr.s office.

Have you also been diagnosed with a Strep throat infection every 3 months?

Compare your symptoms carefully with those of a Strep throat infection. A severe and sudden sore throat without coughing, sneezing or other cold symptoms like a stuffy or runny nose, painful & difficult swallowing, red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus, tiny red spots on the soft or hard palate, swollen, tender lymph nodes in your neck, fever over 101, headache, rash, stomachache and sometimes vomiting. How do you compare?

Of course, it's possible to have many of these symptoms and NOT have a Strep infection. Testing is the definitive means of making an accurate diagnosis and I strongly suggest this be done. Because we can't see viruses and bacteria with the naked eye, just looking isn't always enough.

This is a complete myth. If it was the case, most small chested women would opt to have them removed. This is not accurate. MYTH. Boobs are FAT.....that's all.

My son had his tonsils removed...and he didn't grow boobs! LOL

I have never heard of such a thing. You will grow into a woman soon enough. The best way to have growth as a female is to relax and let it happen. You have already been designed. Making wise choices with your behavior and in taking care of your body, will enhance your potential. Bacterial Tonsillitis, what can I expect?My 7 year old daughter had a high fever for 3 days, stiff neck, extreme headache, coated tongue, swollen throat glands and white spots on her tonsils. That was about 3 weeks ago.
I brought her to the dr. on the 2nd day and he prescribed her penicillin. She missed school for 1 week.
After 1 week, I sent her back to school. Now, this morning she wakes up with a sore throat once again. No fever this time though but, she looks very pale and has red eyes. She also has swollen glands and the white spots on the tonsils once more.
My other daughter (6 years old), feels fine besides a slight headache but, she also has a one-sided very swollen gland.
I kept them both home from school and they are going to the doctor in a few hours.
Why didn't the first round of antibiotics kill this thing? What would be the next course of action? How long should children with tonsilitis stay out of school? My oldest daughter already missed one week and it is only 2 months into the school year. And advice? TY!
P.S. if this tonsillitis is bacterial then how did my 2nd daughter get it?

Bacterial infections spread just like the viruses do. Could have been many reasons the first antibiotic didn't work. Had she been on that particular one lately? Maybe she was just resistant to that certain one. Make sure she drinks plenty of fluids and watch her airway. Also, how many times in the past year has she gotten tonsilitis? May be time to look at have a tonsilectomy. I really wish you luck!

sometimes if your daughter is resistant to the antibiotics it will come back. if it is a STRONG infection it could take another round. there were times i was on 3 rounds on antibiotics. finally at 30 they took my tonsils out. my tonsils would swell so bad that when i turned my head i couldnt breathe. as for the other daughter, she might have drank from a cup, ate off a spoon etc that your "sick' daughter had used. or it could be coincidence. germs are getting stronger from the over use of antibiotics. your daughter may need a stronger one to kill it. my dr has completely given up on using amoxicillin/penicillin. if you are overly concerned find your self an ear nose throat dr as they sometimes have a better handle on tonsillitis.

Just keep going back to GP and make sure they take the medicine prescribed. Some times one anti bacteria may not suit and has to be changed or prolonged If it is a bacterial infection then the time off school varies - get sick-notes from their Doctor (keep copies to prove non-truancy) and he will tell you when it is safe for them to return to school. Hope they will both be well again soon and try not to stress as they don't need you making yourself poorly do they now? lots of ((((HUGS)))) to all of you,

Could I get a tonsillectomy?I'm 18 and my mum recently pulled me to the side and told me she'd noticed my breath wasn't smelling very good, and was wondering why because I brush, use mouth wash but my breath doesn't stay fresh long. It's really embarrassing, and after sulking and sitting thinking about why this could be, the only thing I can put it down to is tonsil stones, which I've had for about a year now. They're really annoying and smell revolting so thats why im assuming this could be contributing to my bad breath. I was just wondering what I could do to get rid of these things :( my sister had all sorts of problems and had both her tonsils and adenoids removed when she was younger, but I've heard you need to have had tonsilitus 6 times for them to consider you for surgery. Could an ear nose and throat specialist not organise a tonsillectomy for me? thank you

yes the tonsil stones are most likely whats causing your bad breath.
its not true that you have to have tonsillitis 6 times before they will take your tonsils out.
just make an appointment iwth an ENT (ear, nose, and throat dr) and tell them why you want your tonisls out and they will most likely be fine with doing it.

Viral tonsillitis or strep throat?I first felt sharp pain on swallowing Friday night. I woke up on Saturday morning with a sore throat. Red and slightly swollen tonsils with white patches. Today I have no pain on swallowing and my tonsils definitely look better. Still some slight redness and white stuff. I'm trying to figure out if I have a viral or bacterial thing going on. I took a home strep test on Saturday and it was negative but I don't really know if I trust those or not because even the rapid ones at the dr aren't always correct. I don't have health insurance so that's why I'm wondering if I should go to the dr for antibiotics or not. I'm worried about the possible complications of leaving it untreated if it is strep cuz I have bad health anxiety and I keep worrying. I feel a lot better than I did like I said I have no more pain when I swallow so I'm thinking it's hopefully a quick viral thing. Any advice is appreciated thanks!

If this is getting better already, if probably is not strep. This usually progresses to the severe stage which forces most people to see a doctor. You can have white patches with a viral throat infection also so that is not definitive for strep alone. 3 days is a rapid turn around so my guess would be that this is viral and will go away on it's own. If, for some reason, it returns and gets more severe, then it would be time to see a doctor.

The best thing for you to do now is to just go to your local G.P

but basically I had much problems with my tonsils myself .. to be fair in the end I just got surgery to get my tonsils removed. It hurt at first but after wards it was well worth it. I didn't have to worry about tonsillitis. If you dont want it happening again I would suggest doing this.

One Swollen Tonsil, white spot?So I noticed yesterday that whenever I tried to swollen, it felt like something was stuck in my throat. When I decided to look inside my mouth last night, I noticed that one tonsil (my left one) was swollen, and if I open my mouth really wide (yawning) I can see a white spot sorta behind it.Both tonsils are also red. My lymph nodes are a lil swollen too, not sore though.
Is it a tonsil stone? or signs of strep/tonsillitis?
Any help would be appreciated.
I'd also like to add that I've had an on/off headache and slight nausea in the past day if that matters.

Sounds like strep throat to me, sorry! because I know how bad strep sucks, but I have had it plenty also. Hope you get better :)

Hi, I used to get this all the time when I was younger. White spots=Strep Throat.
Go to the doctor and get some antibiotics, hope you feel better soon!

my lady displaying the same symptoms was treated w\nystatin ,amoxacillin,prednizone,acidophillus. and was never really given a dianosis after five visits to 3 diffrent doctors.

It sounds like a strep-throat; however, that's the sort of diagnosis only a doctor can make. Go to the doctor asap.

Why don't you see a medical doctor? This is the only sensible solution I can see. Infections just seem to get worse if left to their own devices. Good luck.

Yes, Strep throat would be the first suspect...

However it could also be a fungal infection giving off growths.

Either way, you'll need to see a doctor in person. He'll take cultures and prescribe some anitibiotics.

helpp advice on what to do about bad yeast infection on skin?OK I think what I have is a yeast infection. It felt like one at first but now the issue has spread to almost my thights in that spot where my leg begins and it folds, the crease. It is the worst on one side in that area. It looks really red and really bad and its not going away. I have been using cream for a fungal infection plus plain yogurt on it. How long will it take to go away???? It looks like this:

on my SKIN. It is not really itchy it just feels sore like a rash and hurts slightly to touch it.
Do I need to go to the doctor for this or is there some stronger medication I can request from the pharmacy?? OR do I just need to be more patient???
for the past 3 months every infection I get goes out of control. First it was my wisdom tooth that caused an infection with my gums then I got a sore throat which spread into a bad case of tonsillitis that was not going away and now this. I have never had a yeast infection get out of control like this ughhhhh...
If anyone has had an experience like this and what did you do and how did you treat it or get rid of it.
Maybe it is not even a yeast infection but what else could it be?

by the way that picture isnt me but it kinda looks like that. The reason I think it is a yeast infection is because I have had them before and it started off as any usual one... the part on the inside seems to have gone away it just got out of control and spread to the leg crease and that part and the rash isnt going away. I don't know, maybe its something else.

it doesn't sound like a yeast infection to me ... if it is a yeast infection you would be having a discharge that looks like cottage cheese and is kinda yellowish ... and it would smell like bread (lol yeast is yeast haha) if it is a yeast infection, get some monistat (the one day one you'll want to kill yourself at the end of the week, if you get the week one)

it sounds more like a fungal infection to me ... I think you're right to be putting antifungal cream on it ... but I would check with a doctor ... it sounds kinda like jock itch (girls can get it too) most jock itch medicines are over the counter these days though so just get a really good one and make sure you're wearing cotton undies and whatnot

I work in a pharmacy and if it is a yeast type infection and you are using a product like clotrimazole or miconazole (Canesten or Micatin) and have been using it twice daily for a week or so with no improvement you should go see a dr. You might need stronger strength cream and possible some level of steroid for the redness which would require a prescription, or it might not be a yeast infection. Most likely though it looks like a form of "jock-itch" caused by a fungal infection, but occasionally, bacterial organisms may cause infection on top of the fungal infection of jock itch. This new infection may become chronic if left untreated and may keep coming back in certain people. Jock itch must be distinguished from these skin problems: Chronic irritation of skin folds ,psoriasis, contact dermatitis
, erythrasma - A reddish brown rash or eczema. So theres some information, but go to the Dr!

What would cause a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes in throat only when I wake in the morning?I am a 30 year old F. Diagnosed a few years ago with IgA Nephropathy. Also am a light smoker(under 10 cigs a day). For the past several years I have been waking every morning with a very sore throat and very swollen lymph nodes in the throat but within a few hours of waking the pain and swelling are both gone. I have no other symptoms other than occasionally I also have swollen tonsils(sometimes just one) that last a few days with no sore throat really and no other symptoms. I have discussed both of these issues with my Gen. Doc and my Nephrologist whom I see for the IgAN and they both seem unconcerned. Several years ago before the diagnosis of IgAN I saw an allergist and when given the scratch tests was very positive for every single allergen - but as I said I am fine during the daytime and evenings and the problem is only when I wake. At the beginning when my IgAN first appeared I would have massive hives all over my body, including in my mouth that lasted about a year.

If you've seen doctors for your other complaint and this problem persists, it could be allergies. First, get rid of your old pillows. You may also want to check your mattress. Perhaps it's time for a new one? Wash you bed linen in a hypoallergenic detergent like those used for newborn babies. Open your windows daily to ventilate your bedroom. Don't consume any dairy products close to bedtime. Elevate your pillow slightly. You may also want to eliminate spicy foods, coffee, fatty products from your diet in case you also have some acid reflux problem. If this doesn't help, see an Ear/Nose&Throat Specialist.

it's allergies, dryness from sleeping and from smoking all wrapped up in one. i know been there. now at 40 i wake up throwing up and trouble breathing and sometimes headaches. not saying your going to do this to but i went threw what u r at 30 i went threw it at about 35 and my health has gone down since.

Any sort of renal disease will cause you to have excess sodium in your bloodstream which can cause swelling. Also, because your body is not properly filtering out toxins, you may have bacteria or viruses that your lymph nodes are catching because your kidneys aren't, which could cause the swelling. But if your doctors aren't concerned about it I don't think that you should be. And you DEFINITELY have to quit smoking.

All allergens including those found in smoke are dealt with in the sinal cavity. These molecules are encapsulated in the sinal mucus and passed out in a nose blow or may drip down the back of the throat. In the time of sleep, this toxic mucus builds up and floods the tonsils and causes major irritation.I suffer from a similar problem and find that if I get up at about 3am and move about and have a smoke maybe, the muck drains and my throat is relatively clear in the morning.

A few things to consider....These are easy to do, such as checking for mold or damp spots in your bedroom as well as the material that pillow is made of.Down and those solid foam pillows can cause allergic types of reactions such as you described.Do you have new carpeting or paint in your room?Check the air vents on the a/c and make sure they're clean and replace the filters if nessacary. I have to change mine every 2 to 3 weeks so as not to wake up with a scratchy throat . Also.....Would you consider getting acupuncture? I'm guessing that your body is in a highly toxic state right now and that your liver( from a Chinese Medicine point of view) can't handle the overload fast enough toget rid of garbage that your body doesn't want.Acupuncture combined with some dietary changes and specific herbs WILL absolutely get rid of and help manage your health situation. You've seen the reaction that the traditional doctors have given you which is to be unconcerned but theres always another approach to solving a health problem.My suggestion is to completely eliminate dairy white bread and pastas and skip the fried food.Incorporate at least 7 fresh vegetables or fruits into your daily routine for a month and see if you don't start feeling a little better.How do I know this? I used to be the queen of toxic reactions.Swollen lymph system, coughing, sneezing,skin rashes and sensitivities, kidney stones and hormone imbalances.I cleaned up my enviornment and my diet along with getting acupuncture treatments on a regular basis.Things still bother me when I go out to places like carpet stores or the shoe dept of Walmart where it stinks of rubber and chemicals but I can handle it better without getting sick.Theres hope for you and I know this because I've been where you are and I feel a whole lot better now .So will you.Why not take a chance on something new for a change.Ok? Swollen tonsils.. SWINE FLU RELATED?I have really swollen tonsils, difficulty breathing, swallowing, eating drinking etc because of the discomfort it causes. I have never had swollen tonsils before, and as i am aware of their function to attempt to get rid of infection that has been inhaled, and the recent swine flu is caught by breathing in.. i wondered if these two were related. I have searched the web for an answer and amazingly found nothing of use!!

How do I cure Giant crater(ed) swollen- sometimes with stones - tonsils with many swollen growths around them?For about the past 3 and a half years, my tonsils are very large/swollen with crater like appearances in them. They have many growths around them that are so swollen in with the tonsils I cannot tell witch is a growth and witch is a tonsil sometimes. There were stones near the beginning but since no real signs of stones. Swallowing is rather difficult most of times and the left side of my throught- starting at the giant swollen/inflamed tonsil area, it has begun to swell downwards into my throught - making it even harder to swallow and such. We cannot afford surgery to get them removed. I have heard about this amazing home remedy that apparently is just about guaranteed to work but everyone wants you to buy their e-book or purchase their book. I am under 18, and I do not have the money to spend on a $ 90 book, we struggle to put food on the table many nights. As my throught is of course swollen with my tonsils - so is just about the rest of my mouth; especially near the back. I have countless little bumps in the back of my thought and in the back of my mouth (referring to what would be considered still inside your mouth because it's in front of that thing that hangs down the center.) The inside of my cheeks are swollen and all the rest. You can't tell from the outside - just the inside is swollen or inflamed.

How do I cure my tonsils and bring them back down to size?

Very, very doubtful.

No. Tonsillitis is usually caused by a bacteria infection not STD's and a sinus infection is due to allergies as well as a bacteria infection. Still no STD's can cause either of those.
Please note that STD means Sexually Transmitted Disease. So Unless your gonna shoot something up your nose or down your throat (YUCK!) then the possibilties are null.

I know I have cryptic tonsils and need to "clean them out" regularly, but one of my tonsils spurts pus out of it when I push on it with a Q-tip, but sometimes it oozes some thick mucous-like stuff (sometimes pinkish) that tastes HORRIBLE. My tonsils are not enlarged, and my throat is not sore. Does anyone have experience with this?

The oozing is mucus which is in the crypts and not yet hardened. An otolaryngologist (ear-nose-throat guy) will tell you that it's possible to empty the crypts with home-made tools and that some of their patients with crypts in their tonsils do just that to ensure fresh breath and no oozing. Others get their tonsils removed.

So i was trying to to laugh and told her why and she was like WELL I HAD MY TOOTH EXTRACTED THIS MORNING, AND HERE I AM. i waslikek LMFAOO. how istonsillitiss anything like having a tooth extracted :| .

I really hate her, andtomorroww is gonna be even worse 'cause were carrying on from last lesson and IWASN'TT IN LAST LESSON BUT DIDN'T TELL HER BECAUSE I COULD BE BOTHERED WITH HER SHIZ. and we needed all these sheets. Damn, and not only do i hate that cow, i hate the whole fucking class !, then at the other end of my school, theres the nicest teacher in the school who teaches history , and ALL my friends are in there, but when i wanted to exchange to that class the nasty history teacher was like NOOOOO. Try talking to your guidence counselor and see if you can get switched to the other history teacher and tell him/her how the teacher treats you. I'm pretty sure it'll work.

Can Tonsillitis be caused by cunnilingus?I do not have Strep, and it's certainly not allergies. I have had tonsillitis twice over the last 3 weeks. The pain and everything stops as soon as I am prescribed antibiotics. The second time, the tonsillitis resumed 3 days after I finished my antibiotics. I have recently been sexually active and I am just wondering whether the cunnilingus might be a cause of the infection of my tonsils.

Is it considered refusal of treatment of a doctor doesn't do anything to get rid of tonsil stones?I have these horrible, disgusting, rancid, foul smelling, tonsil stones. I already have severe depression and anxiety and these make it worse. I can never have a boyfriend because they don't want to smell these things on my breath. I actually never had a boyfriend and I'm not ugly it's just these horrible things turn people off. I obsess about them constantly and they are constantly coming out of these holes in my tonsils. Sometimes I want to end my life cause of them. They are causing me to not have any friends in life. My doctor refused to remove my tonsils to get rid of them and that is the only way to get rid of them I heard. I tried everything they said to get rid of them. I floss after every meal, use thera breath mouthwash, brush my teeth after every meal, brush my toungue after every meal. I make sure my mouth is rinsed out before bed and I gargle. I never had sinuses or a runny nose so it's not from that. I want my nasty ugly tonsils out and every doctor refuses to do it. Isn't this considered refusal of treatment. Don't I have a right to treatment. I thought doctors have to help people to be healthy and cure them. I know some adults said they had their tonsils removed because of them well why won't they remove my adult tonsils? Can I sue them for not treating me and refusing to treat me. What if I comitted suicide cause of the tonsil stones? Would the doctor be the cause of my suicide from neglect to treat the tonsil stones? I cry everyday cause of them. Please someone help I want to kill myself right now cause of this horrible disease. Please answer my questions I know I have a lot of questions in here and I'm sorry about that but I just feel lost and hopeless cause it seems like there is no hope for this situation. I need quality of life and doctors are suppose to do that. I feel so hurt and betrayed by doctors. I need to deperately get rid of these nasty smelly things quick or I will commit suicide. Do you ever get reflux? Some of your bad breath and tonsil problems may come from reflux.

The reason that doctors won't remove your tonsils is that they serve a very important role in your immune system. They help keep you healthy. It would be totally negligent for a doctor to remove your tonsils if they aren't infected. I doubt that any doctor would do it. It's not like the "old days" when doctors removed tonsils at the drop of a hat.

If the tonsil stones are up high where you can see them when you go "Ahhh" you can remove them yourself with a long handled Q-tip swab (or even a regular one). It takes some practice not gag when doing this.

Drink lots of liquid when eating your food so it won't get stuck in your tonsils. Avoid food that may make it worse. I have found that popcorn always gives me a problem, and so does cottage cheese and feta cheese, and sometimes nuts.

An excellent ENT doctor once recommended gargling several times per day with warm diluted mouthwash to help loosen them. He also recommended a weak solution of peroxide and water, but I don't remember the exact amount of each....just that there was only a little bit of peroxide mixed with the water.

Anyway, I'm sure it's not quite as bad as you feel it is. Everyone gets some of these from time to time. I'm not sure what sort of doctors you're seeing, but you need to go to a good Ear Nose Throat doctor. Look on Yelp to see if anyone in your area has great reviews and start from there. You could see a doctor several times per year and he could remove them for you on a regular basis.

One swollen/sore tonsil. SCARED please help.?Hey guys, I'm a 17 year old female and pretty bad health anxiety.
I don't smoke or drink at all.
yesterday i went to the dentist to get a filling and stuff and of course one side of my throat felt numb because of the freezing.
As the freezing began to wear off, my throat started hurting, but it only hurt on one side, and it wasnt even the side of the freezing.
i woke up today and my throat feels scratchy when i swallow, there are no whtie spots though and only one of my tonsils is swollen.
im extremely worried.
i have no othere heath problems except ibs. i have also been getting pain on my lower - mid right abdomen, but i think thats my ibs acting up.
i dont have a cough or fever, no chills or sweating.
PLEASE help
also, theres no voice loss or anything.
its not severely swollen, btu its obviously irritated

You better call the surgeon's office and ask his/her nurse.

You SHOULD have a paper from the surgeon that SAYS what you can and can't have before surgery. If you can't find it---call their office ASAP. Even if it's closed, they are available after hours. DON'T GUESS. And don't think you know better than they do. If there is something you aren't supposed to take---there is a REALLY good reason for it.

Luckily you are young, and I can say from what I have read that it is relatively easy. If you wait until you are older then it would be really a lot worse. I didn't get mine out and now I am older and I'm scared to get it done.

i got my tonsils removed when i was 6. it doesn't hurt that much. they knock you out so you won't feel a thing. the only aftermath, though, is that you can't really talk or eat(even if it IS ice cream!)or do much of anything with your throat.
i was out for three days and i was fine when i went back to school. you just have to be really careful about what you eat and do around your throat area.
don't worry, though. it won't hurt that much.
on the Pain-O-Meter i would give it about a 4

See a doctor while it's still really sore. Tonsils serve a function and you may be better off keeping them if you don't get tonsillitis this bad very often. Or he or she may decide this is bad enough to get rid of them.

Tonsilitis!!!! Go to your doc, you'll probably get antibiotics for it. Take paracetomol, and gargle with salt water.

could be tonsilitis or strep...see a Dr, if it's strep you need antibiotics and to stay away from people. (it's highly contagious and will make you more ill, if it's not taken care of.)

Last week my son's tonsils were so swollen it was cutting off his airway. He had to be rushed to the ER. He had tonsillitis so bad they had to give him intravenous anti biotics and steroids to shrink the tonsils. The ENT said if he gets tonsillitis more than 2 times a year, you should get them out. The tonsils are no longer doing their job. He is 20 and getting his tonsils out on Thursday.

I went to doctors yesterday and doctor didnt even check my throat or ears and said its just 'bad luck' that Im sick. I am 20 weeks pregnant and went to doctors about my throat instead he said No your fine and did my pregnancy check up instead. It seriously looks like I need antibiotics. Anyway, white stuff on your tonsil indicates an infection, possibly thrush? (yeast infection)

If its sore, and you have white stuff in your throat, your doctor needs to look again, what an idiot.

go to another doctor... it might be tonsillitis, but I am by far no doctor. My friend had white pus in his tonsil and it was tonsillitis, that is only why i suggest it.

I am a doctor..
Well, i know that sore throat is such a pain.

For the time being, use salt water to gargle your throat.do it 3 times per day.
when you goto sleep do it as the last thing so that you wont wash you mouth after the salt water gargle.

do some steam inahaltion.do it about 2/3 times per day.it would help.
take some hot water into a bowl.then cover you head with a towel and inhale the steam.

but you may have to take antibiotics if it is a bacterial infection.amoxycillin 500mg , 3 times per day for 5 days may work..but it again depends on whethe you have penicillin allergey and on whethr the organism is penicillin resistant..
so not take amoxycillin if you have penicillin allergy..

the best thing is to get a throat swab culture and ABST done.
it would determine whether this bacterial or viral.consult your doctor for this.

if its viral there may be no need to take anitbiotics. but you just cant sometimes differentiate from examination alone.

for the time being do the above mentioned things.
also avoid drinking cool things and drink more and more hot water and hot beverages.
Do you work in a very cold environment? if so , avoid that place for the time being and goto a warmer area of your workplace..
Do you have white dots all over the palate? if so, it may be infectious monneucleosis? but white stuff on just one tonsil might just be pus..

Sounds like tonsillitis, you need antibiotics before the infection spreads, it can harm your baby... Doctors these days seem to not want to treat patients they way they should, I guess it doesn't matter anymore sense they make enough money from the drug companies they don't have to really care about the patients. Either that or the medical schools are turning out more and more quacks, I had to see 3 different doctors before they could diagnose a broken foot.

I have had this exact same thing happen to me. I had a horribly sore throat with white bumps over the entire back of my throat. I waited a week and 1/2 and the nurse told me had I waited 28 more hours I would have developed SCARLET FEVER. Please go to another doctor before this becomes something serious.

tonsillitis surgery then recurrent possible?well, i just got tonsillitis surgery done and its still in healing process. it's been now little over 3 weeks. i was just wondering, after it's fully healed, if i were to smoke and drink alcohol, is there a chance that i will get tonsilitis again? or at least somekind of "tonsil symtoms?"
fyi, i used to smoke cigs 4 times a day and drink alcohol occasionally.

can anybody answer this for sure? cuz i don't want to risk it if there's a chance that tonsils will swollen again by smoking and drinking.

Smoking or sucking (i.e. sucking on a straw or a cigarette) can cause a blood clot (formed from the healing process after you tonsil removal) to break off and cause what may seem like "tonsil symptoms" but is really an old clot breaking off do to constant sucking (smoking cigarettes.) I'd smoke in moderation if it's possible to minimize this possibility.

i`m not sure if this answers your question... but.. since you can`t get tonsillitis if you don`t have tonsils... then i doubt it will come back... but... it is possible for your tonsils to grow back... my grandmothers did... [ you didn't say you got yours removed though.. but i don't think theres any other way to get rid of tonsilitis...]

I think its more like the tonsillitis is related to the coughing. It happens to me sometimes =(

I think what happens is you get a cold (or flu) and then your throat ends up inflamed so you end up with tonsillitis.

The coughing and vomiting are part of the flu symptoms. Usually i go to the doctors when i get tonsillitis and if your in a lot of pain then maybe you should go too, the doctor can give you antibiotics to help.

I have had tonsillitis at least 8 times, so i know what your going through! The coughing is completely normal its caused by the virus. Which as well as affecting the tonsils, it can also affect the respiratory system (causing the cough.) I've never vomtied though, but the symptoms differ from person to person. So its normal, but make sure you get lots of rest and some medicine from the doctor. Get well soon!

It sounds like a bacterial infection to me..now whether it is related to the tooth extraction or a coincidence..who knows...but my guess would be that it is related to the tooth extraction because the the human mouth is filthy..as long as you are on antibiotics you should be fine..just make sure you complete the whole course of antibiotics..if it has not cleared up by then or has gotten worse you need to go back to your doctor/dentist..good luck

You know what you should do? Go to your doctor. Not all of us are medical experts on yahoo answers, and even if you did "know" what you had, it could mess up your diagnosis if you suggest you have said condition. For example, if you told your doctor you had a bacterial infection, your doctor is going to look for that specifically instead of keep an open mind for a variety of conditions that share symptoms.

Is There A Doctor In The House?I Am Sixteen And I Still Go To The Pediatrician. (i don't quite like her. she man handles me.)
Anyway, I've gone to her office a total of six times over the last two months.
It's all because of my tonsils.
They're swollen and irritated and covered in white 'gunk'. It's impossible to eat and it's even a little difficult to breathe. At the moment, my right tonsil is the largest and in the most pain. The pain is also in my ear, though my ear isn't infected. The tonsil on the left is only slightly swollen yet the lymph nodes on the left side are swollen beyond comprehension. :(
Other symptoms are vomiting, dizziness, an occasional 'through-the-roof' fever, nausea, limited neck movement, an unusually dry mouth, body aches, chronic hiccups-(i've had them for days), and sleep deprivation.
I'm not sure if all these symptoms are tied to one sickness, but any information I can give helps, right?
And the tests the doctor's ran showed negative for strep, mono, and tonsillitis and I have no allergies.
Can anyone tell me what's wrong??

this is likely an adrenal gland infection that has consumed your tonsils and lymph nodes of your neck and oral cavity. other than that i am just baffled by your condition, especially because you say that you have been tested for streptococcal pharyngitis, and the results came back negative.

It depends, if you have acute Tonsillitis (caused by bacteria, and it gives you a fever) I think sometimes they can treat it successfully with antibiotics, but it it doesn't help or go away then the tonsils must come out.
But, if you have chronic Tonsillitis (caused by a virus, but there's no fever.) then the Dr. will have to examine and decide. But, usually, it's not a problem to keep your tonsils.
I was told I have chronic Tonsillitis, (my tonsils are just swollen). The Dr. said I could choose if I wanted to have them surgically removed or not. I decided to just let them be because I don't want surgery.
Otherwise, no I don't think Tonsillitis will just get better over time. My tonsils have been swollen (without problems) for 2 years now.

Does body temperature between 99.0 to 99.9 among children 10 yrs to 12yrs old, is due to any serious disease?Eleven yrars old boy who has enlarged tonsils and adenoids experience changes in temperature during diffrent times in a day. His temperature falls to 97.2 F at 2 a.m, improves to 98.4 F at 7.00 a.m, reaches 99.4F at 10.00 a.m and generally keep with in the range of 99.2 F to 99.9 F from 9.00 a.m to 9.00 p.m. The boy also suffers from thrombocytosis with platelet counts occasionally increasing upto 5,80,000. The temperature rarely come to the normal range of 98.6 F despite continued intake of antibiotics like cephalexin, ampoxiline, cloxamycetine etc. FNAC could not be possible as sufficient sample could not taken out of the deep rooted swollen lymph nodes at the base of tonsils on either side. Does the position explained above indicate any serious malignant disease or it is just due to infection of tonsils?

Of course you need to check with your doctor but.....I've always had a higher temp then most people,about 99.1-99.9.....I use to use it to my advantage to get out of school.

Sounds like you know more than anyone on this site is going to know...but this temperature variation isn't much and as it is staying below 101 I wouldn't worry about it. People oftentimes have temperatures ranging from anywhere between 96 degrees and 99 degrees without any real signs of infection. I type lots of medical records and it is a rarity if I type anyone having the perfect 98.6 temperature...they always vary and the docs never worry unless the temperature rises above 101 in older children and adults and as high as 102 in toddlers and infants.

The temperature of your body changes throughout the day. Temperature is highest in the morning and lowest at night (it's partially responsible for your sleep-wake cycle.) A fever is a sign that the body is fighting off an infection, chances are good that is just due to his tonsils. Take him to the doctor if your really worried, but remember that antibiotics do not help viral infections!

For kids who are in cancer treatment, the doctors do not even consider it a fever until it reaches 100.5F. At that point they want them to come to the hospital because that is when bacterial infections could be brewing. Anything below that is just "temperature variation" IMHO it is probably fine.

A temperature of 99.0 to 99.9 indicates only one illness: hypochondria. Normal temperatures range from about 96.0 to 100.0, and even by a conservative estimate, temperatures below about 100.5 don't count as a fever, and aren't cause for alarm. What you describe sounds to be well within normal range.

I must say, though, I'm a bit confused as to why you posted this in the cancer catagory. Also, this is something that should be discussed with the child's pediatrician, not random people online who may or may not know what they're talking about.

Low grade infection continuously in the tonsil and adenoids. Temperature is reflective of that. It doesn't sound like the antibiotics are working. Swollen lymph nodes are a good thing, in that it is keeping the infection from spreading to other parts of the body. The most common response to this kind of problem is to remove the tonsils. However, I do not recommend this because it is eliminating a defense mechanism by the body to keep infection from going deeper into the system. I would try Colloidal Silver from the Health Food store (liquid) and gargle with it. If you can't get that, I would try essential oils like cinnamon, peppermint, clove smeared all over the throat area several times a day or more. Need to dilute with a little vegetable oil so it doesn't burn the skin. But it will kill the infection if you just keep applying it till the infection is gone. Could also try garlic, echinachea, goldenseal supplementation. You will need to investigate some of these internal supplements to see what your son is willing to take. Anyway, hope that gives you some ideas.

I have to make an important decision--Surgery?

I have to make an important decision--Surgery?I have a pretty major decision to make regarding surgery. I am 17 years old and although I am not overweight (I am 5'11 and 160 pounds, muscular build) I have sleep apnea. I've got it pretty badly--in a sleep study I did a few weeks ago, I averaged 7 times an hour in which I stopped breathing (for 8 hours a night, that equals an average of 56 times in one night!) and each time, my oxygen level fell to 73 (which is very low). As a result, my doctor referred me to an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat doctor). I had the appointment today, and the results were that my tonsils are insanely large (almost twice the size they should normally be), my adenoids have grown back (I had them removed when I was 6, but apparently the damn things came back!), and my uvula (little dangly thing in the back of your throat) is gargantuan.

The ENT gave me these options:
1. Have the surgery to take out the adenoids, tonsils, and most of my uvula (if not the whole thing). The issue is that it's only a 50/50 chance that the surgery will make a major difference in my apnea and actually cure it. It's almost certain that it will help, but only a 50% chance that it will majorly help me. I would be out for about a week and a half to 2 weeks, including no work, no school (not that big of an issue for me...I've got senioritis already), no driving, etc. Basically being homebound for 2 weeks. That, and this surgery will cost several thousand dollars.

2. Don't have the surgery and instead go straight to a CPAP or BiPap machine (breathing machine to use at night to provide air pressure to keep my airway open so that I can breathe somewhat normally). This will not cure my apnea in any way, but it will make it manageable. It's not a cure, just a treatment device.This also won't keep my apnea from getting worse in the future as the surgery could. This machine will also cost a few thousand dollars.

3. Don't have the surgery or the machine, but continue life the way it is. I really don't want to do this (I am exhausted almost all the time) and I want the problem to be fixed, but this one doesn't cost any money--money which we may soon not have (my dad works for GM...'nuff said).

I know it's my decision (and my family's) in the long run, but I really need advice on this. This is a life-changing decision, and if I don't treat this it can and probably will kill me later in my life. Honestly I'm leaning towards #1 because that could actually fix the problem--#2 would just give me a machine which would help, but not fix the root problem. I figure if I'm 'broken' I should have the surgery to 'fix' it, not just something to help but still be broken.

What do you think? I really need advice...

My first inclination is to tell you to go with the surgery. Still, because it is such a hugh decision, have you considered getting a second and third opinion? Go with the dominant recommendation.

Ive had glandular fever for 3 months do I get tonsils removed?One is pretty swollen, I'm about to move country in a few weeks and wonder if I just get them out now. They're not sore but I'm getting those tonsilith gross balls again getting stuck in my throat. Would having them remove help with recovery of glandular or just get red of getting tonsilith. Maybe I should visit a special tonsil dr?

they would probably not remove them when you have glandular fever. usually you need to have three or four bouts of tonsillitis in a year before they consider removing them.

I get them every now and then and i remember standing in front of the mirror for hours trying to get the dam things out without sucess then i bought a waterpik at target for 40 buck and it removes them with little effort just aim it at your tonsil stones on low pressure and they pop right out. Best 40 bucks ive ever spent no more bad breath

How to know if my Scarlet Fever is gone?I am almost 19 years old, and have always had problems with getting Strep and/or Tonsillitis; very rarely any other sicknesses.This winter I first got Strep mid December, as far as I thought it had cleared up. I had surgery on my jaw December 29. Then January 28th til now I've been on 5 different antibiotics and 2 or 3 steroids because of reaccuring strep and tonsilitis; I even got tested for mono and it came back negative. I'll think I'm better but within 2 days after being off the meds my tonsils and glands swell up huge. Last Thursday (2/24) I woke up puking then Friday I woke up with a rash (being off my antibiotics and steroids for 1-2 days). I went into the Dr. and got diagnosed with Scarlet Fever, because my body never fully reacted to the previous meds. I already was referred to an ENT to get my tonsils out and went there yesterday, he saw no signs of my antibiotics even working yet again. He said that in fact my tonsils do need to come out but we can not go through with that until my body fights this infection completely. He took me off my antibiotic (as far as antibiotics I've been on Bactrum, Augmentin, Clindamycin) and he put me on Keflex as of yesterday; If I am not better by tmrw morning I will have to be admitted to the hospital and be put on IV antibiotics. I realize I will have the rash covering my body for 2-3 weeks. IF I'm better tmrw I am allowed to go back to work Friday. But my tonsils and glands are still swollen, and I still have the white patches in my tonsils. How am I supposed to know if I am well, as this has been going on for a long time now and I don't really remember what "normal" feels like? Should the swelling of my glands and tonsils be completely down? And should the white patches be gone? When I went to the ENT yesterday he said my tonsils were a little over 2 times the size of what they should be, and they are even more swollen today. Any feedback would help, as you don't hear much of this sickness these days, at least where I'm from.

From what you are describing, you are probably still infected with an antibiotic-resistant strain of strep. You are not better if the tonsil swelling has increased. You might just plan on going to the hospital tomorrow. There hasn't been much time for the Kelfex to work, but if things are getting worse while taking Keflex, you almost certainly need to be in a hospital. This type of infection can morph into something far more serious so it needs to be attacked as aggressively as possible.

Can tonsillitis go away on its own?I have tonsillitis right now to the point where its really painful to swallow. If ignore it will it get worse? yes it will go away on it's own. you can try chloraseptic spray, and tylenol etc., some people like salt water gargles. I have only one concern , you may have strep throat and not just tonsillitis, there can be complications with untreated strep infections so you might want to see the doctor just to be sure.

What to do when I have strep throat(?)?Last week on thursday my throat started feeling sore all of a sudden, I checked the back of my throat to find that my tonsils looked fine so I didn't worry too much then.
On the weekend, I started coughing up green-yellow flem and today i checked to find that I have white spots on one of my tonsils and a small amount of red bumps at the back of my tongue.
I am assuming that I have strep throat? (correct me if you think i may have something else)
(Other symptoms include some sore muscle, minor headaches but not really a runny nose/sneezing)

I called my doctor just then but they're fully booked out and tomorrow I have to sit an important exam so I'm probably not able to make an appointment until the afternoon.
Although I'm feeling a lot better since the weekend, should I still bother to make an appointment? Or is flem a sign of my body fighting off the bacteria?
ALSO, what's the best thing i can do right now without any medication?

You DEFINITELY still need to go see a doctor, as soon as possible. Do NOT go to school because strep is very contagious. In fact, you shouldn't go to school until you've been on your antibiotics for at least 24 hours. You can always make up the exam.

Drink lots of cool liquids, such as water or ginger ale, especially if you have a fever. Stay away from orange juice, lemonade, and other acidic drinks because they can sting your throat. Warm liquids like soups, tea with honey, or hot chocolate can be soothing.

Ask your doctor before using throat drops or over-the-counter throat sprays because these may make a strep infection feel worse.

Tonsils/Swollen/Sore/WHY?Alright. When it first started hurting i thought i had the common sore throught. And usually its no problem curing it and it goes away within a day.Maby into next day.But this is different because i wouldnt call it sore throught id call it a sore mouth.. Its not really in my thought its more the roof of my mouth. My tonsils are swollen so im sure it has sumthing to do with that. I never thought i would have to take them out.But, maby this is why ppl do take them out. but it feels like the roof of my mouth is swollen and acts like a bruise.Its kinda hard to swallow/spit/eat but the usuall place in my thought were a 'sore through' would take place doesnt really hurt.

Sounds like you might have tonsillitis which can be treated with a round of antibiotics. If you have like white patchy areas on your tonsils then you could have strep throat which is also treated with antibiotics. SO either way you need to go to the doctor and get checked out.

I had mine removed when I was a teenager and the pain was not that bad. you just can't talk that much and eat solids for a week or so.

Buy some of your favorite ice cream. Soft stuff for a few days.

You can do this. I'd suppose that you can take pain relievers such as Tylenol, too.. Your doctor might even prescribe something mild for you.

I had mine taken out when I was about 20. Sure it hurt for a few days but in the long run it was so worth it. Just make sure any pain killers/meds they give you aren't giant pills! They gave me these horse pills and I couldn't even swallow my own spit. Idiots. I had to squish them up and put them in a liquid. Tasted yucky.

- sore throat, yellow spots on my tonsils. hurts to swallow.. (but I have to).
- weak and tired constantly.
- does it make sense to just be really emotional? This stupid pain makes me want to cry constantly cause I've tried everything to soothe it and they work for approx. 15 seconds.
- no fever. but I go between freezing to too hot constantly. So annoying.

I went to the doctor, she tested for strep, but I dont get results til Saturday.
She barely even said what the other possibilities are.

What does it sound like?

Cause I tried all those things and they dont work.
And its a sore throat, not a flu =P

On Tuesday AM I took my 4 year old son to the doctor because his tonsils had been huge for a week and didn't seem to go down at all. And there was white spots on them. He and his brother had a bad cold, but for some reason my 4 year old got it bad in his tonsils. Anyway, the doctor said to wait it out and follow up in four weeks to see if the tonsils went down and if not, she'd send him to the ENT. My questions are: how long do bad tonsils last after a cold? And is it normal to still have white spots? Should I call her back and ask if antibiotics work? He seems to feel fine, but his voice sounds horrific! Like there are two golfballs in his mouth (which there almost are--the are so big that they cover the uvula). Please help--I'm such a worried mom :).

I would go to another doctor and get a 2nd opinion.

I feel your concern and I think it is warrented.. The tonsils are commonly still traumatized by a bad illness for a while after the other symptoms are relieved.. If he had a fever along with the swollen and white spotted tonsils that's when they need antibiotics because that means there's an infection.. Since he doesn't have a fever antibiotics would not help at all as far as bringing down the swelling.. You might ask the doctor if an anti-inflamatory is more what he needs if anything right now.. You may even try getting him to eat lots of cold Popsicles.. Not ice cream cause the cream will form a film on the tonsils.. The cold of the Popsicles could help relieve the tonsils and start to shrink them and it's a great source of water to keep him hydrated and continue to make him better..

If you ever really don't like what your doctor says you can always get a second opinion. As a mom it's your job to make sure you are getting the right answers.. I hope this all helps and I hops he gets better

A cold does not cause white spots on tonsils white spots are a sign of the tonsils being infection have him gargle with warm salt water if he can and take him to see an ENT.

Those white spots are an infection and they need antibiotics. See another MD. Take him to a walkin clinic today if you cant get into another MD. The sooner you treat the infection the sooner he will feel better.

That doctor is a quack. Take him to someone else! If his tonsils are swollen with white spots, that's definitely an infection. My daughter has had tonsillitis twice and several throat infections and each time, she had white spots and swollen tonsils. If it doesn't get treated, it can turn into strep throat. Take him to another doctor ASAP!

i would take him to the er for a second opinion it seems that he has some kind of and infection in his throat and from the sounds of it it isn't getting any better so i would take him to the er

what are on my tonsils???I get these little white balls that I can actually take off my tonsils. they smell like sulfer!!! its so gross what is this and how can I get it to stop?

does your throat hurt? if it does your body is fighting some kind of infection. how do you feel otherwise? sick? healthy?
give a little more of a description and maybe this will make more sense.

They're called tonsil stones. Basically, food particles and bacteria become trapped in the crypts of your tonsils and harden into those smelly white balls. You can brush your tonsils with a very soft toothbrush or you can clean your tonsils regularly with a water pik.

Several days--take some aspirin or tylenol for the aches and pains...
eat your favorite foods, kick back and relax!

You should start to feel better in about 2-3 days. Make sure you continue to take the penicillin until you run out. You can wrap a damp warm towel around your neck to ease some of the discomfort and follow it up with ice chips to cool down your throat.

you will be better in a few days, but not well, take the meds like they are prescribed, if you stop taking them when you feel better, that is what makes diseases resistant to meds.

Do you think it's cancer?For a little over a year, I have had a white patch on the inside of my cheek accompanied by three lumps (the biggest is less than the size of a pencil eraser). I also have two lumps on the floor of my mouth that are also no bigger than a pencil eraser. I have never smoked or drank in my life, I am only sixteen years old (and these appeared when I was fifteen) and they have not grown at all in the past year or caused any pain or discomfort. I also had an abscessed tooth removed about three months ago but the dentist didn't mention a thing about it. But recently, I have also had difficulty swallowing and it feels like it may be tonsil stones or post nasal drip. But could the white patches be a sign of precancer? I don't want to go to the doctor because I'm afraid that they will tell me it is cancer and since I've waited a year, I'm afraid that it might be too late and either there will be nothing they can do or they'll perform surgery and I'll have to eat through a tube the rest of my life. I also don't want to put my family through all of that. My family also has no insurance. I don't know what to do.

they specialize in skin care and will let you know what you have.

oh and i recommend not chewing tobacco either, really messes your mouth up

dont worry; you have no reason to believe its cancer; just go to your doctor and have them check it out. they will tell you what to do. and even if your family has no insurance; you are a minor and many agencies provide healthcare for children

Every dentist would look for signs of cancer at every visit.. So since you were just there 3 months ago, I would assume you are OK. But, to be self assured, call the dentist and tell them of your concerns.

Because you are only 16 I will make this a suggestion instead of berating you. You say "I don't want to go to the doctor because I am afraid....."
That is ridiculous. It could be many different things once you realize the human mouth is high up on the list of extremely dirty things (bacteria etc) so it could be many things. I had a dear friend who used to say the same thing "I am afraid to go to the doctor..." when his stomach became distended and it was hard to the touch. I advised him to go get it checked....
He has been dead for over a year now (at the age of 53) because after letting it go for 10 years it was too late as he had cirrhosis of the liver (too much alcohol was the cause).
Please go and get checked. Odds are it is nothing of consequence. No matter what it is the options are always better if any medical problem is caught early.
My son had cancer which was diagnosed just before his third birthday. His mother (who only had him 1-2 days weekly) noticed a bump in his cheek. It was a bad, aggressive form of cancer but it was caught early and he was treated and is fine today (save for the fact that he is a teenager like you)
So please tell your parents and get it looked at as it is better to know what is wrong.
BTW- dentists perform screenings for oral cancers during their exams.

You're contagious, so you should get antibiotics from the doctors.

Yes , untreated strep throat can turn into mono, " the kissing disease" you are very contagious for your own health go to your doctor and be put on medicine.

It sounds to that it might be strep. I never go to the doc, but I did when I had strep. First, you will get better much more quickly if you get antibiotics. I am not a heavy user of antibiotics, but strep throat is a good time to use them. Also, you are contagious, so to stop spreading the bacteria, you need to get on antibiotics.

Why not just let your body fight it off? Well, you are risking getting rheumatic fever which can cause permanent joint and heart valve damage. You also risk kidney damage from another complication.

So, coming from someone who has only been to the docs a few times in the last five years, yes, you need to get in as soon as you can. The med's are very cheap and effective and will get you feeling better fast.

It's just swollen glands, this is normal. If it doesn't go in a few days see your GP.

You better call your doc and see about finishing them! If you stop in the middle of a antibiotic cycle it can create a superbug. This means a bacteria that becomes immune quickly to antibiotic you took and can increase infection in short order.

I'm an alt med specialist and am against antibiotics most of the time,but I do know that if you start them you are supposed to finish them. I'm not a doctor however so you should call your or a hospital to ask what to do. Everywhere I read though docs have said to finish them even if you feel better.

Now for what I would do apart from drugs. I would,if it was me,make a tea out of olive leaf extract. I would take drops under the tongue of Super Strength Wild Oregano Oil by North American Herb and Spice with a water chaser. I swallow water first as it's strong oregano taste will dry out throat without water. After a break I would drink Tabasco water with a water chaser swallowing it after using it like a mouth wash.. Then after another break for a bit,I would gargle with salt water,of course don't swallow salt water as it will make you sick,and spit it out. I would also drink 100% pure cranberry juice from Trader Joes and/or a high quality cranberry supplement with a good amount of water. Salt water is said to force bacteria out of cells and that is why it's supposed to fight infection.

Also I would stay away from yogurt and/or probiotics until finished with antibiotics as they combat each other from what I've heard.

Lastly,keep in mind this is all what I would do for myself! In no way should you listen to me over a doctor. See what works for you and make up your own mind! I hope you heel quickly!

Edit: Also,ointment is for exterior parts of the body only.

Antibiotic ointments contain stuff that are not for ingestion. Also, do you know how far back in the oral cavity the tonsils are? You're going to be gagging from your finger if you attempt to touch your tonsils. Pills are better tolerated and are easier to take. If you feel you are having problems with the medication your doctor gave you, you should discuss that with him and ask for alternatives rather than ask strangers on the internet.

Well , when I got my tonsils removed , I didnt have to stay over night . Its only a 30 minute procedure . They release you when the drugs ware off .

you won't have to stay overnight at the hospital because it's a pretty simple procedure. and since you're young, you should recover within 2 weeks. they recommend that you don't do any physical activity after the operation because you don't want to dry your throat out and cause any problems.

I am writing this on my own behalf to appeal the University of Arizona Financial Aid Office's decision to suspend my financial aid for 2010-2011. I understand the strict standards needed to ensure that the financial aid system is not taken advantage of and abused. I also understand why my aid was suspended and I take full responsibility for my lacking academic performance. However, as you will read in my statement, I have had some extenuating circumstances that I believe should be taken into consideration when determining my appeal status, along with my plan of action regarding improving my grades.

I have had medical issues since 2008 stemming from the removal of one of my ovaries due to a large soccer ball sized tumor. It was determined to be borderline malignancy, which did not require chemotherapy, but it did require a follow up surgery and frequent visits to an oncologist for check ups. The checkups and the threat of having my remaining ovary removed hanging over my head the last couple years have caused an enormous amount of stress and anxiety for me. My oncologist suggested that I may be depressed and should consider speaking with a therapist over a year ago, but I brushed aside her suggestion. I now realize this very well may be the case and further hindering my academic performance. With this realization, I am determined to use all resources available to me to treat the depression, and no longer have it affect my ability to do day to day tasks and remain committed and perform well in my classes.

It isn't until recently that I realize my doctor was right, and I should have sought help to cope with the stress and pressure not only with my medical problems, but also the incredibly tough transition to be a University student of non-traditional age. I struggled through my first semester, barely scraping by with a 1.999 GPA. I was put on Academic Probation, but was never given any kind of warning concerning my financial aid status. I was also ill frequently during the Fall semester which caused me to miss classes. As a result of this, I did have my tonsils removed over Christmas break. In addition to any health problems I was having, I was struggling in my classes and still not sure where to go for help. I was overwhelmed, and didn't realize until it was too late that I may be suffering from depression in the wake of the medical issues. When I realized my GPA would yet again not be anywhere near where I wanted it to be, I began formulating a plan to drastically improve my academic performance for the Fall and subsequent semesters. I also plan to change my major to Ecology and Management of Rangelands, I realized I was passionate about protecting the beautiful western rangelands that have been home to me. I learned of an internship through the Bureau of Land Management for college students that would be related to the career field I wish to pursue after completion of my degree. The only problem is that the internship has a minimum GPA requirement. It was then that I realized I needed to take control of my academic performance and no longer allow any outside issues to distract from my number one priority, which is school. In order to improve in my classes and reach a GPA not only in compliance with SAP standards, but also to be eligible for the internship I desire and more reflective of my own abilities, I have formulated a plan to improve. My plan is to utilize tutoring services on campus, starting at the beginning of the semester, and throughout the semester on a regular basis. For classes I am having additional struggles in, I plan to get a private tutor and meet with that tutor on a weekly basis to stay not only on top of everything, but ahead as well. I also plan to see my doctor about possible depression and get help for that issue, and no longer allow it to negatively affect my life, especially my academics. I have a game plan to improve, to change, and to succeed. I know I am capable of being a formidable academic presence and of performing well in school. I just had to determine what tools I needed to help me to succeed. And I now have these tools in my arsenal, and they will be used to their full extent to help in my academic success at the University of Arizona and further career success after graduation. Even though I do work part time, I will restrict the number of hours a week I work, and only have one job, so that I have more time for schoolwork.

I am not the typical 18 year old freshman who is away from home for the first time and was too busy partying and living the social college scene to pay any attention to academics. I am several years older, and I don't even drink- much less "party". I worked a part time job on campus in addition to volunteer work and occasional babysitting. I am putting myself through school, and cannot afford to pay out of pocket to have financial aid reinstated. I had a rough couple semesters of transition and stre

I think that you have valid reasons. I would recommend having someone proofread your appeal (perhaps an English teacher or a student who has excelled in English courses). I would also recommend that you immediately make an appointment with a psychiatrist to treat the depression. This is something that you shouldn't be waiting on... it's something you should have already done if it's one of your steps for preparing for the next semester. Then, you could write that you have started therapy sessions for the treatment of depression - this shows that you're serious and that you're being proactive. In addition, if medication is required to treat your depression... it can take months to get the medicine and/or dosage correct. It will be better to deal with the side effects while you're out of school, rather than dealing with that next semester. I would leave off the last paragraph, as there are many students that do not party, and most cannot afford to pay for schooling. Your previous paragraphs listing your medical problems prove that you aren't a typical student. I would also speak with someone at your school Learning Resource Center (may be a different name), about the tutoring schedule, available days for help, etc -- then you can include in your letter that you've already contacted them (list who you contacted and their position), and that you have all of the information for available hours, help, etc.

If you get denied, look at enrolling at a community college for a semester or two... it will be much cheaper to pay tuition there. Good luck to you.

Your letter is way too long.

You need to be short, concise.. and tighten it up to less than half what you have.

Often times, your chances of getting approved relies heavily on the documentation you provide. The good news is a "soccer ball sized tumor" isn't exactly subtle, but don't say that in your letter if your documentation say something like...."benign cyst .02 cm in diameter on pinky finger".

Short, sweet and to the point... and less personal information is better especially in discussing mental health issues.

Ive noticed that the past 3 days, my Lft tonsil has been swelling. I dont have a fever, no white streaks for strep, or anything else. My Lft ear does hurt and there is some ringing.
I was wondering:
If these things in the crypts, are there a while, and you cant get them out, or they are hidden (like mine was) will it block anything? I dont remember from my ANP 1 and 2 if there are any type of drainages back there or not. I know there is one between your teeth on the side, Iv had that one blocked and my entire Lft side swelled up.

They are tonsil stones or tonsilloliths. I am one of those lucky people that get them too. My ear nose throat doctor said the only way to get rid of them forever is get my tonsils out. When my tonsils start swelling up I know it is time to clean them out. My tonsils are full of scar tissue from strep infections as a kid. Scar tissue does not have good blood flow so the lack of immune system activity on my tonsils allows the stones to grow.

You can gently push on the side of your tonsil with your finger or a Qtip and push them out. If you gag too hard some people even use a water pik.

Be sure to wash your hands very well first and be very gentle you don't want to get your tonsils bleeding.

When you are done gargle some salt water or peroxide. You want to kill as much bacteria as possible.

It usually takes a few days for the swelling and sore throat to go away. If you are seeing the stones you will have a lot to clean out.

If it does not get better then go to a Ear Nose Throat specialist and consider getting your tonsils out. It is a painful operation as an adult.

How to get over my fear of cheese?Yes, I loathe cheese. Ever since I was a small child. My mother told me I ate cheese when I was 1-2 yrs old but eventually had tonsil removal surgery and ever since after the surgery at 2 yrs old, I was reluctant to eat anything. She had to start me from the beginning with all solid foods, but cheese I never got back to. She would constantly try to get me to eat it, but I would always say, "Too nasty to my mouth." Maybe I shouldn't call it a fear, but I avoid it like the Black Plague. I used to pick off all morsels of cheese off of a pizza, then reheat and eat. It took me about 2 yrs to be able leave a small amount on the pizza. I truly want to get over this. I want to be able to eat macaroni & cheese, cheesecake, cheese pie, etc. Some things may not even taste remotely like cheese, but if the word is in there, I don't eat it. It's a hindrance since I can't enjoy as many foods.

My reaction to eating cheese is normally followed by my throat closing, then vomiting. I'm not allergic to it. I just 100% can't tolerate the taste. I can't even tolerate watching someone eat cheese nor can I be in the same room with cooking cheese because of its aroma. It makes me extremely nauseated.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get over this and be able to try new foods? I would, at least, be happy if I could tolerate the sight and smell of it. Thanks!

You do NOT "spit them out."

Your tonsils ONLY come out if they are surgically removed. If you are spitting nasty stuff out of the back of your throat, that's called phlegm. It comes from your nasal passages and drains down the back of your throat. If it's green or yellow, then you have a sinus infection and you should see your doctor.

Maybe you're referring to "sneeze nuggets"? Those do "grow" back (more like "accumulate" rather than grow), but that's very different.

There is no set # of times exactly! Of course everyone has their opinions!

If the tonsillitis is caused by strep bacteria, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics, a type of medicine that kills bacteria. It's very important to take the antibiotics exactly as you're supposed to and finish the entire prescription to kill all the bacteria.

If the tonsillitis is caused by a virus, antibiotics won't work and your body will fight off the infection on its own. Sometimes kids get an operation to remove their tonsils, but only if their tonsils get infected a lot during the year or are so big they make it hard for the kid to breathe at night.

If you get tonsillitis, here are some tips that can help you feel better:

Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat smooth foods, including flavored gelatin, soups, ice-pops, and applesauce.
Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods.
Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in the room where you spend the most time.
Rest.
Soon your tonsils will be back in action and ready to fight germs again!

My Ex Girlfriend has the same or similar problem as you do and has been to the Dr several times in the last year of her tonsils, in fact the last time they actually had to give her a series of shots to clear the problem up. It seems however that there has been a change in the way they are treating these case. In the not so distant past they would pretty much take them out for anything but now it seems like they just don't like to do it anymore. In fact she begged them to the last time she was in and could barley breath, but it was "well it it happens again we will take them out" speech.. the same one they gave her the time before that, even with a couple of different Dr.'s treating her. Combat Medic has a great list of things to try though and I would add trying to avoid subway alot, something to do with the extreme amount of yeast they use in there bread promoting bacterial growth. Sounds like tonsillitis. Very painful but will go away. You doctor can give you some antibiotics if you are desperate.

this is a normal reaction a body has when it is fighting an infection(cold or flu). its nothing to worry about unless you have a high fever and more severe symptoms(sore throat for more than 3 days).

Maybe eating a lot of sweets and ice creams. They are usually the cause of tonsil swelling. Another thing is the sudden change of weather. Take antibiotic to stop the swelling.

It's been years, and I'm sick of feeling like this!?I don't know if anyone will be able to help me, because I've been to so many doctors and I just kind of gave up. I'll be as detailed as possible, any suggestions are more than welcome.

GENERAL:
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Height: 5'9 / 175cm
Weight: 128 lbs / 58 kilos

This started when I was around 11 years old, and has been on and off for a while, the past nine months have been the toughest yet.

GENERAL SYMPTOMS
- ALWAYS tired, no matter how much I sleep.
- Chronic headaches which never go away (feels as if it is behind the eyes)
- Stiff neck sometimes.

I was diagnosed with mononucleosis about a year ago, and I assume that I have recovered from this. I was also diagnosed with anaemia a few months ago, but I stopped taking the pills due to nausea and tried to contemplate with iron-rich foods. Periods are regular, though my headaches tend to get less during my menstruation.

I was also diagnosed with tonsillitis last month, though this is better now but I remain to cough a very tickly dry cough all the time. I feel awful generally, and it's affecting my concentration, willpower and school work. I probably should mention that I am a very hard-working kid, with lots of school pressure and stress (I spend hours working a day).

I don't want to sound like I'm dying, I know there's people who have it far worse out there.. but can anyone suggest anything? I've had MRI scans, blood tests.. and it just doesn't seem to show much. Could it be depression?

Oh, also, I've tried several painkillers/paracetamol's but the only one that seems to really numb my headaches is 'Ibuprofen'.. the kind that you dissolve in water. I don't like taking it though because it makes me nauseated.

It's sounds to me like your just "growing" When I was your age I used to get A LOT of headaches as well and I never did anything about them. Well now I get Migrains and its not fun! I know what it feels like to get headaches...I have one right now! Tell your doc to get you on something for that. I think the rest will work itself into place

Best drugstore solution?I don't think it's strep throat because I've had that before and I don't see those yellow spots on my tonsils... I also can't go to a Dr because of money and other reasons. I DO and HAVE BEEN smoking and I tend to sleep with my mouth open. I'll stop smoking. But what else can I do??

What's the best thing to get from the DrugStore? Or best HOME remedies? (i gargle with salt water n drink lemony tea already)

Get a humidifier. If you live in a cold climate the air is very dry now. Get one that puts out steam. It will moisten the air you breathe--especially with an open mouth.

Delsym and Buckleys are the two strongest cough syrups I can think of. If those don't work after 2-3 more days, then you should seriously consider going to an actual doctor.

Drug Store solution- would just to get that spray for your throat that makes it fill numb. That Clor....something i think. That might take away some of the rawness from numbing it. Other than that: cough drops to soothe it, humidifier or grab a pan of hot water and put your head under it in the steam- preferably with some eucalptus oil or something in it might help. Hmmm....resting your voice- not talking much so it won't get irratated as much, eating slow or liquid only foods so it's easier to swallow. That's about it- from personal experience. If it's not strep -it's just one of those things that have to go away on it's own. If it is strep or a chance it could be- avoid sugar or eating alot of sugar on things because strep feeds off the extra sugar.

Can Swollen tonsils cause breathing problems?I have trouble breathing in the past month and it feel like my throat is swollen. But when I look in my mouth I see that my tonsils look swollen.

Yes it can. I had my tonsils for many years before having them removed. They caused me to snore, which in fact is because you stop breathing... momentarily. So if you are referring to you stop breathing while you are awake, I would say not really unless you breathe through your mouth and not your nose.
But if you are having trouble while sleeping, that is a strong possibility...
See an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Dr for more information.
If you see it as a problem see another ENT. It took me 3 before they took my tonisils out at 27 years old.

It's possible that if you have tonsilitis and it is extreme, that your breathing can be lightly difficult, but mostly you would just have trouble swallowing. You probably have a different viral or bacterial infection that has become bronchitis. Your lungs are inflamed and now you cannot breath easy. Go see a doctor for some amoxicillian or erythromyecin before it turns into pneumonia.

heres some help, first off go to the grocery store and buy lots of green tea! the stuff is so amazing for immune system and infection its not funny!

then head to the nearest store specializing in homeopathic medicine and see what you can get yr hands on!

usually if surgery wont work theres something herbal that can HELP!!!

Water pick them out of the pockets and gargling with salt water or over the counter bacterial mouth washes helps some. I have had them all my life and asked repeatedly to have my tonsils removed but after age 30 they really don't want to take them out. That's the only real way to get rid of them for good. If you find out how to get rid of them for good without surgery let me know.

How much longer should I stay out for mono?So the symptoms started last Sunday, the 29th of August. I noticed I had a really sore throat, and it hurt to swallow. So the next day, Monday, I missed school and my mom took me to the pediatrician, so the pediatrician looks at my throat, and is like disgusted and tells me I have a bunch of puss all over my tonsils. I had no idea it was that bad. And my lymph nodes were horribly swollen. So, they did a throat swab,and did a mono spot and checked for strep, both came back negative. So I thought it was just like tonsillitis, you know whatever. The pediatricians really did not help much. But my mom wanted an extra opinion, so the next day we go to an ear nose and throat doctor, and he looks at my throat, and he's like well it looks like mono. And I was confused because the mono spot came up negative. And he said, those aren't always 100 percent, so I got blood work done, sure enough two days later, my blood work comes back, and I do in fact have Mono. So he gives me hydrocodone, these steroid pack things. I forget what exactly it's called, metha something. And lidocaine for extreme throat pain. So the days go by, my throat has been hurting a bunch, and I've been extremely tired. My ears surprisingly have been the most painful. My left one, which is the side where the more infected tonsil is. But today is Monday, so I missed a whole week, and I'm starting to feel a lot better. It doesn't hurt all that much to swallow, and my ear pain has gone down, but I've tried to go out you know for rides with my mom just to get out of the house, and I still barely have any energy. I'm not sure how much longer I should stay out, because it's my junior year and I don't want to miss a whole bunch, but on the flip-side, I don't want to jeopardize my health, or anyone else's since, I'm guessing I'm still contagious. What do you think? Should I be out for the rest of the week? My school is pretty strict on if you're contagious they really don't want you to come to school. Hahah. But my education is important to me! Help?

It is not uncommon to lose a month of school from mono. You do NOT need to expose other students to it.

When my daughter had it, the school made arrangements to bring her assignments and books to her so she did not miss any school work during that time. She returned to school after a month (still very weak) and was at the same stage in study as the rest of her class--graduated with the rest of them!

Ask your Mom to get a note from the doctor about your illness, then ask her to visit the school, take the note from the doctor, make arrangements for the continuation of your studies--and you'll do fine!

My friend had it in college and was out for over 6 weeks at home in bed. It was a long time before her doctor released her to go back. So, your doctor needs to release you and I am sure your school would appreciate a note from your doctor stating you are healthy enough to attend school and be around peers.

What causes mono?

Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is most often seen in adolescents and young adults. Children can get the virus, but it often goes unnoticed because their symptoms are mild. Older adults usually do not get mono, because they have immunity to the virus.

Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease." If you have mono, you can avoid passing the virus to others by not kissing anyone and by not sharing things like drinking glasses, eating utensils, or toothbrushes.

As soon as you get over mono, your symptoms will go away for good, but you will always carry the virus that caused it. The virus may become active from time to time without causing any symptoms. When the virus is active, it can be spread to others.
What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of mono are a high fever, a severe sore throat, swollen glands and tonsils, and weakness and fatigue. Symptoms usually start 4 to 6 weeks after you are exposed to the virus.

Mono can cause the spleen to swell. Severe pain in the upper left part of your belly may mean that your spleen has burst. This is an emergency.
How is mono diagnosed?

Your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms and examine you. You may also need blood tests to check for signs of mono (monospot test) and the Epstein-Barr virus. Blood tests can also help rule out other causes of your symptoms.
How is it treated?

Usually only self-care is needed for mono.

* Get plenty of rest. You may need bed rest, which could keep you away from school or work for a little while.
* Gargle with salt water or use throat lozenges to soothe your sore throat.
* Take acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil) to reduce fever and relieve a sore throat and headaches.
* Avoid contact sports and heavy lifting. Your spleen may be enlarged, and impact or straining could cause it to burst.

In severe cases, medicines called corticosteroids may be used to reduce swelling of the throat, tonsils, or spleen.

I think that you can eat other things when it feels goood to do so. Definitely after a week.

about 1-2 weeks ...depending on how fast the body heals itself and following dr's orders.....no talking and soft foods and liquids

I'm no expert, but when I had my tonsils out, I was advised to not only eat soft stuff, but to have some toast and cereal - tonsil debris needs to be scraped off, apparently. But then I had a good mixture of things - I think commonsense will prevail, if your daughter can tell you what hurts when she eats then don't give her that. Most food goes pretty soft when chewed enough anyway, but maybe avoid crisps and really hard, spiky stuff.

certainly after a week, it should be okay to eat more tahn only soft food... earlier, it depends on if she feels good... i have had a tonsillectomy, and i could eat normal food after three days... i got also the advice to eat many cold things... ice-cream, cold yoghurt, ... it 's induvidual, i think, but after a week it should be okay.

SO WHO NEEDS CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?
Almost all people can benefit from the use of Cranial Osteopathy at some stage in their lives. This may vary from birth trauma, both for the mother and the child....particularly if there has been trauma to the head….small trauma like dental work, through to major head injuries following car accidents and the like.

HOW DO BABIES BENEFIT FROM CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?
During birth the bones of a babies skull are compressed and will often overlap each other. Following the birth the bones will try to reform into their normal positions to allow the inner movement of the brain, the fluid and the containment membranes to take place. Commonly not all the positions are how the body would like it to be, and when this happens the body must now attempt to compensate for these malpositions. These compensations will often cause the baby to become unsettled in a variety of ways, as the babies body tries to come to terms with the problems that exist. Some of these problems may lead to colic, poor sleeping ability, poor feeding ability or just crying or unsettled.

The Osteopath, working cranially, will locate the areas in the babies body where the problems exist, and facilitate the babies body to release these areas of tension and take away the bodies compensations that are causing the problems. The baby should be more relaxed and a far happier child.

Glue ear in children responds very well to cranial work, likewise many conditions that need the immune system to be at best. Things like tonsillitis, colds, and stomach problems like colic and reflux all are much helped by getting the babies system working at its best.

The number of treatments will depend on the problems that the Osteopath finds when the child is examined. Some children need only minimal treatment and others require quite extensive treatment.

Help me understand this. Do "Cranial Osteopaths" really claim to "cure" glue ear by feeling pulses in the skull, or is "cure" a word-that-must-not-be-mentioned in Osteopathic circles? Colds? Colic? Poor Eating habits? Trauma to the Head? All treated by the ten magic fingers of a Osteopath with no medical training?

What kind of conditions in a baby require "extensive" Osteopathic "treatment"?

Should this be allowed? Or should Osteopathic "treatment" be limited to patients who have reached the age of consent — like tattoos and nose plugs maybe?

Osteopathy is one of the most bizarre and colorful pseudomedical cults of the 19th. Century. It was somewhat reformed in the 1950s, but some of the teachings of the cult's founder persist. What you cite is an example of an impermissable activity.

I'm not a cranial osteopath, I'm one of their patients (I'm also a scientist and a sceptic, but I don't exclude the medical profession from my scepticism). I didn't receive any osteopathic treatment until I was 34, about the time I became perhaps permanently disabled. Had I received this treatment as an infant I think it's unlikely that I would have ended up this way. I could write an awful lot in response to this (and will happily explain more either by email or in a more suitable forum), but will limit it to the following:
1. In Australia & NZ osteopaths receive about as much university training as doctors, cranial ones moreso, but it's not all the same as "medical" training as they don't do surgery or prescribe drugs (in the US you have osteopathic MD's, the system is a bit different). Conversely, doctors have only the most rudimentary palpation skills, whereas in osteopaths these are highly developed. Osteos here learn how to diagnose a lot of conditions, know what they can and can't treat, and know when to send someone to a doctor.
2. About the half the ones who have treated me had postgraduate qualifications in paediatric osteopathy, and some of those are currently engaged in training other osteopaths.
3. If that pulse in the skull is dysfunctional it can be painful and cause a range of significant problems. That is my life. The pulse can be measured with modern scanning equipment such as doppler ultrasound.
4. The way osteopaths work with the body, and define the function of its structural elements, is completely different to the medical profession, and cannot be understood by thinking only within the medical model. For example, a "compression" is a fundamental concept to an osteopath, and something they endeavour to cure, but it's something that's invisible and meaningless to a doctor.
Conversely a "headache" might be a valid diagnosis to a doctor but to an osteopath it's just a symptom that could have a variety of causes. An osteopath cannot reach a diagnosis without using their hands to feel what is happening in a person's body. It's not always possible to measure osteopathy's effectiveness against the comparatively vague definitions of the medical conditions for
which their treatment may be helpful, as many medical definitions are based on symptom, not fundamental cause. If your headache is caused by a cranial compression, osteopathy can likely offer a permanent solution, but if it's caused by chemical imbalance, osteopathy may not be able to help at all. And let's face it - is there any medical condition more vague, and more likely to represent a wide range of possible fundamental causes, than colic?
5. Osteopathy is perhaps the safest form of medical intervention there is. There is no safety issue with taking an infant to an osteopath, therefore the question of the infant's rights isn't relevant. Given the willingness with which we inflict surgical and pharmaceutical intervention on children, both of which are more violent and potentially dangerous, I think the question is pointed in the wrong direction. I had surgery at age 9 which would have been unnecessary had I had osteopathic treatment, surgery that probably compounded my health problems (e.g. I developed asthma soon afterwards). Where were my rights then?
6. Because osteopaths rely primarily on their ability to "listen" with their hands, and less on a patient's ability to describe their symptoms in words, their capacity for treating a patient who can't yet speak is far less compromised than that of doctors.
7. The amount of treatment required is a function of the complexity of the acquired injuries and compensations. The more injuries one suffers (either contemporaneously or subsequently), and the more time between the initial injury and the treatment, the more work it generally takes to correct. The transcript didn't extend to injuries and/or stresses acquired in-utero - by the time a baby is born it could have been through quite a lot. There are good reasons for discouraging pregnant women from playing rugby!
8. As you can see from the transcript, they regard themselves as technicians, not magicians. Talking to them I can tell they are technicians, but to those of us who are helped by it, their treatment feels like magic.

Tonsillitis , strep, cold, I don't know?Woke up the other day and my tonsils were swollen, no fever, a little nasal congestion some coughing. I thought it was just a cold until my tonsils were so swelled that it's hard to eat anything. I don't have the money to go to the doctor right now and I don't feel like it's a complete emergency so I don't want to block the traffic in the ER for something they may consider minor. I checked again to see if there was a fever when I woke up and it was only 99

I did a search for home treatments, and I've been switching back and forth from Tylenol and ibuprofen for the swelling. I did have enough for that new cepicol with pain numbing action, but it doesn't last long. And one two sites it says gargle with salt water, but that burns.

Is there anything else I can do at home or is it time to go to the ER even though it's not a heart attack or anything, just swollen tonsils…….with no white patches

Tonsils collect bacteria. It could be the water you're drinking or something you're eating. Drink bottled water or boil the tap water. Clean out the refrigerator.

You got me while I was board, so I looked up the differences between strep throat and tonsillitis.

According to WebMD tonsillitis presents itself with a cold and cold symptoms as you have described.

Strep throat comes on suddenly without cold like symptoms and is marked by a fever of 101 or above and needs to be treated with antibiotics.

I'm no expert but it sounds like tonsillitis and you are doing the home treatment look here:

It says it might take 4-10 days so you can wait a few days to see if you feel better or go straight to the doctor, or ER and get a strep test to be sure, because strep can cause other problems if not treated. It's all in the link I gave you.
